State of Massachusetts Steam Fireman - 3rd Shift in Worcester, Massachusetts

The Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital, under the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH), is seeking a Steam Fireman. This opportunity will play an essential role in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of our power plant equipment. As a Boiler Operator, you will regulate controls, monitor gauges, and adjust valves to maintain optimal conditions for steam energy production. Your keen attention to detail will be vital as you read meters and gauges, ensuring temperature, pressure, and fuel levels remain within specified parameters. In this role, you will be responsible for identifying and addressing faulty equipment, performing minor repairs, and conducting routine maintenance to uphold operational integrity. Your meticulous record-keeping will contribute to the monitoring of key metrics such as fuel consumption and equipment performance. Additionally, you will collaborate with team members to maintain cleanliness standards and coordinate fuel deliveries. If you thrive in a dynamic environment where safety and efficiency are paramount, join us in powering the future with cutting-edge energy solutions./__/ _ Please Note_: The selected candidate will work from 10:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m. The days off are Saturday and Sunday. * * _Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_ * Operate boilers and auxiliary equipment in adherence to standard operating procedures and safety regulations. * Monitor meters and gauges at designated intervals to ensure optimal temperature, pressure, and fuel levels. * Adjust valves and controls to regulate fuel flow, air flow, water level, and steam pressure for efficient boiler operation. * Identify and troubleshoot faulty equipment, determining necessary repairs and notifying appropriate personnel. * Conduct routine cleaning, maintenance, and lubrication of power plant equipment and auxiliary systems. * Perform minor repairs and adjustments using hand tools to maintain safe and proper equipment functionality. * Record and maintain accurate logs of temperatures, fuel consumption, meter readings, and other operational data. * Maintain cleanliness standards in work areas and oversee proper storage of fuel supplies. * Coordinate with fuel deliverers to ensure timely and efficient storage and distribution of fuel. * Participate in training programs to stay current with industry standards and best practices for power plant operations. _Required Qualifications:_ * Knowledge of boiler types, including low and high pressure, and their applications. * Familiarity with steam boilers, auxiliary equipment, and operational techniques. * Proficiency in operating high-pressure gas and oil-fired boilers and associated equipment. * Understanding of electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic controls used in power plants. * Mastery of precision measuring equipment used in power plant operations. * Skill in calibration and adjustment of control systems. * Knowledge and adherence to safety protocols in power plant operations. * Competence in fuel storage and handling procedures. * Proficiency with various small hand tools used in maintenance and repair tasks. * Ability to comprehend and apply relevant laws, regulations, and procedures governing unit activities. _Preferred Qualifications:_ * Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency. _ About Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH):_ Located on over 100 acres in Worcester, Massachusetts, Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH) is part of an integrated network of effective, efficient and culturally competent mental health services. It provides intermediate and long-term inpatient care for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness who live in Massachusetts, as well as individuals requiring specialized court ordered evaluations.
