Description
The R&D Mechatronics Engineer creates automated packaging platforms and supporting systems to enable faster and more efficient delivery to Amazon's customers.
The primary role of the R&D Mechatronics Engineer is to lead the conceptualization and technical development of next-generation packaging platforms and supporting automation systems. This involves designing, simulating, and building packaging machinery and automation that simplifies the fulfillment network, reduces delivery times, and exceeds customer packaging expectations.
Key job responsibilities
Conceptualize, develop, and simulate new packaging machinery and automation designs
Execute the electrical design workstreams encompassing the panel design, motor & drive sizing, electrical load calculations, system I/O architecture and layout, wireway placement and design, safety/guarding, and incorporation ancillary systems at the project / platform level while ensuring the technical, cost and timeline objectives are achieved
Deliver engineering workstreams including panel design and layout, power calculations, safety analysis and compliance with appropriate regulations (UL, CSA, CE, etc..) electrical schematics, electrical hardware selection including HMI, PLC, servo axis controllers and drives, VFD’s and I/O racks
Partner with with the Mechanical Engineering member(s), ensure project documentation is complete and scalable for electrical schematics, BOM, I/O’s and subsystem programs
Support the project team in the safety certification of the project / platform (CE, UL, CSA, TUV, etc..)
Monitor and leverage new technologies to improve functionality
About the team
Aligning mechatronics and packaging into one organization, (Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging, MSP) enables Amazon to develop, deploy and scale automated solutions across the Amazon Fulfillment Network, especially from Pick to SLAM for the Automated Robotics Sortable (ARS) network. This group works backwards from deep customer insights to deliver solutions that seamlessly integrate into brownfield and greenfield deployments with safety as a top priority. In addition, Sustainable Packaging solutions are a thread that impacts and connects all parts of the Amazon Stores supply chain and customer experience. They take ownership for the entire packaging experience including selling partner design, first/middle/last mile and total customer experience. They eliminate waste and packaging wherever possible. Where Amazon added packaging is required, they are transitioning from single-use plastics to curbside recyclable paper-based materials.
Basic Qualifications
Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures
BA in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering
5+ years packaging machinery development experience
Proven experience in advanced motion control platforms including but not limited to linear drives, high axis count servo platforms, and robotics
Proficiency in 3D design and simulation software
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production
Experience with the project management of technical projects
8+ years packaging machinery design experience
Knowledge of packaging machinery safety standards
Operations and packaging materials/supply chain experience
Advanced simulation and controls programming expertise
Knowledge of the patent processes
