Job Overview – As an Amazon Robotics Structural Engineer, you will develop innovative designs for our emerging robotic systems and improve existing building infrastructure to optimize performance and enhance customer experience. The ideal candidate has experience designing and analyzing building systems, is enthusiastic about analytical problem solving, possesses practical knowledge of concrete, electrical, lighting and structural building aspects and is a role model for engineering best practices. This position reports directly to the Mechanical Engineering Manager.

The Civil Engineer will be responsible for:

• Working with an interdisciplinary team to execute product and building designs from concept to production including specification, design, prototyping, validation and testing

• Coordinating efforts between Hardware Development, Construction, and Operations

• Writing functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional test procedures

• Exhibit role model behaviors of thorough engineering analysis and cradle to grave ownership

• Design and adaptation of holistic solutions for ambiguous problems with fluid requirements

Key job responsibilities

• Manage infrastructure specifications to ensure buildings are properly designed to support new HW development projects

• Work with HW development teams to ensure product development is aware of and properly considering infrastructure limitations such as power limits, floor loading, concrete anchor selection, fire suppression and permitting requirements

• Respond to service disruptions on robotic systems and Keeping The Lights On (KTLO) product sustainment issues

• Work with Building Design and Sustainability teams to forecast and prepare for changes to critical infrastructure

A day in the life

On a typical day in this role, you will be managing several efforts. Some of your time will be spent working with HW development teams to help them understand current infrastructure specifications. Simultaneously you will be collecting new requirements from these teams and working with our building design and construction partners to understand the cost, timing and technical challenges associated with them.

Additionally, you may be asked to support efforts in existing buildings where our robotic systems are experiencing downtime or malfunctions due to building related issues. You will need to work with HW designers, onsite support engineers and our construction teams to root cause problems, manage corrective actions and ensure services are restored as soon as possible. This may require occasional travel to the field to meet with site personnel and deep dive technical issues.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS in Civil or Mechanical Engineering with at least 4+ years of experience

  • Experience working with building electrical, compressed air and fire suppression systems

  • Ability to effectively communicate concepts and write technical documents

  • Experience evaluating design, performance and logistical tradeoffs for building systems and operation of equipment interacting with the building infrastructure

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work well with teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Field and international experience dealing with various standards, construction regulations and bylaws

  • Understanding of structural steel, concrete, electrical and equipment anchoring design practices

  • Ability to review and provide input to construction documents with little oversight

  • Experience in the design and sustaining of mechanical products and equipment

  • Proficiency documenting designs in accordance with ANSI Y-14.5

  • Experience designing machinery safety systems in accordance with ISO 13857 or similar standards

  • Experience participating in hazard analyses and risk assessments

  • Proficiency with Product Lifecycle Management PLM software and ECO’s

  • Proficiency with SolidWorks Simulation or ANSYS Finite Element Analysis tools

  • MS in Civil or Mechanical Engineering
