The Category Merchant is responsible for managing the overall merchandising process for the Optical category, developing business objectives, achieving sales, margin, and inventory goals, negotiating vendor pricing and terms, building vendor relationships, and providing leadership to the merchandise team. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Communicates with the Assistant/Associate on the Assortment Plan to ensure clarity of the assortment for the cross-functional team and accuracy of information in SAP. Connects strategies to execution and maintains an understanding of operational goals and challenges in order to best support execution.

  • Develops and executes a strong assortment strategy based on product performance, market trend data, and membership analytics.

  • Proactively monitors potential risk within the assortment and takes action to mitigate.

  • Establishes and maintains a reputation of credibility and responsiveness in the marketplace.

  • Negotiates programs with vendors to maximize value for the business.

  • Ensures that the Assistant/Associate executes the marketing process as required.

  • Develops and executes holistic promotional strategy for assigned categories in alignment with the total company Marketing strategy.

  • Collaborates with Marketing on special promotional opportunities for the category.

  • Develops category pricing strategy and executes markdowns and price adjustments as required.

  • Monitors the market to ensure competitive pricing advantage for our Members.

  • Develops the space allocation strategy in partnership with the assortment planning team.

  • Collaborates with vendors to ensure packaging specifications will execute seamlessly in a club environment.

  • Develops sales and margin plans and sales forecasts for assigned categories in partnership with the Planning team.

  • Collaborates with the Planning & Allocation teams to ensure timely delivery of product to the clubs and adherence to inventory plans.

  • Provides leadership and training to the team. Provides the team with frequent and actionable feedback and professional development opportunities.

    Other Optical merchandising responsibilities include:

  • Managing Optical vendor and product P&L

  • Managing Essilor Supply Chain

  • Managing frame selection and refresh dates, negotiating costs and return agreements on product and partnering with P&A on forecasts

  • Contract negotiations with eyeglasses frame & lens and contact lens partners

  • Retrofit/Remodel budgeting and roll out execution, placing PO’s

  • Managing relationship with VisionWeb/Uprise and prioritizing initiatives

  • Managing Floor Reader/Sun business and profitability

  • Article setup/creation and partnership with lab to create new FPC’s

  • Planogram execution and frame board flow/assortment management

  • Club communication to support new initiatives/SOP

  • Managing contact lens business and ABB relationship

  • Digital support/roll-out of progressive lenses

  • Managing optical accessory business/product selection

    Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or operations related field

  • 4+ years related merchandising / category management experience within optical

  • Negotiation skills and decision-making ability

  • Proven analytical and organizational skills

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Prior optical experience purchasing eyeglasses frames and lenses a huge plus
