VHB Environmental Project Manager - Energy in Watertown, Massachusetts

The Energy Revolution has gained major traction in Massachusetts in recent years, and VHB is evolving with this trend. We provide our clients with consulting services to plan, site, and monitor major projects and meet the growing demand for new infrastructure in the Commonwealth and New England. We see the need for increased skills in the areas of energy siting, battery storage, demand management, and the growing area of technology/big data.

VHB is seeking an Environmental Project Manager to join our growing energy practice. This position is aimed to attract a person who wants to be part of a growing team of professionals and lead the internal and external components to grow and develop our energy business in the short and long term. The ideal candidate will have previous experience managing complex permitting and licensing efforts associated with energy-related projects in New England, such as power generation, electric transmission/distribution, natural gas transmission/distribution, and renewable energy generation. Excellent communication skills are a must for this position, both externally with clients, agencies and communities, and also internally for one on one communications with our diverse team members.

  • Perform project management responsibilities, including project deliverables, scope development, cost estimation, staff resource identification, implementation oversight, budget tracking, and completion of administrative requirements

  • Manage project teams responsible for supporting the environmental permitting and licensing, engineering, and construction compliance phases of projects in the energy market

  • Develop and implement overall strategy and approach for environmental aspects of complex projects

  • Client management

  • Stay up to date with state and local energy trends, and regulations

  • Help identify the differentiators in the market place

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary VHB and subcontracted project teams

  • Oversee quality control of environmental permit deliverables for projects

Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Team-oriented with strong capability to motivate others

  • Must be a highly motivated self-starter

  • Must demonstrate superior ability in collaborative problem solving with stakeholders, clients, and teammates


  • BS in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or related field; MS preferred

  • 12+ years of professional environmental permitting and siting consulting experience

  • Experience with state and federal environmental regulations and environmental permitting

  • Experience with federal and state energy siting processes (including EFSB experience)

  • Client management experience

  • Relevant environmental project management experience
