Evolv Technology Research Scientist Intern (Summer '25) in Waltham, Massachusetts

The Elevator Pitch

Do you want to gain hands-on experience in Research & Development (R&D)? Are you eager to learn and develop critical skills for your future career? Do you have a love for learning new things every day?

In this 10-week Research Scientist Intern role, you will be responsible for researching, testing, and evaluating new sensors, artificial intelligence algorithms, and/or computer vision and image processing technologies. Not only will you develop skills in scientific research, but you will also gain exposure to the ins and outs of the company and to the other departments and how they operate in relationship to Research and Development.

This internship is a 10-week program: June 9nd – August 15th

Success in the Role: What are performance outcomes over the first half and second half of the internship you will work toward completing? 

In the first 5 weeks, you will:

  • Understand Evolv, our product and culture, what we do, and why we do it

  • Collaborate with a team to solve interesting research problems by leveraging advanced mathematics, statistics, physics, and computer science

  • Be actively learning, by reading literature, working hands on with hardware and sensors, and exploring new algorithms

  • Develop experimental test plans to quantitatively differentiate solution A from solution B

  • Utilize general purpose software tools (e.g. Java, C/C++, or Python) to collect data

  • Communicate and work closely with the hiring manager on your project

  • Embrace new challenges with enthusiasm and a commitment to acquiring new skills

In the last 5 weeks, you will:

· Use an analytical software tool (e.g. MATLAB, Python, or R) for data storytelling and to present the technical results and insights from the R&D project

· Surface innovative ideas and recommendations back to the team that can be used to inform corporate and product strategy

· Demonstrate personal and professional growth throughout the internship

· Gain greater clarity on your career aspirations and preferences

· Reflect on your internship experience with a sense of accomplishment, knowing you made a meaningful and impactful contribution to the company

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

Technical development

· Collaborate on both hardware and software projects, gaining hands-on experience with innovative technologies.

· Utilize Linux OS and Python for various development tasks and scripting needs.

· Participate in data collection efforts to support ongoing research and project objectives.

Problem Solving

· Navigate challenges that arise during R&D projects, demonstrating resourcefulness and critical thinking.

· Recognize when to tackle problems independently and when to seek assistance from team members, fostering a collaborative environment.

Innovation

· Propose and develop new ideas based on research findings to drive project initiatives.

· Investigate and evaluate at least one new idea, assessing its feasibility and potential impact.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team?

You will be joining the Evolv Innovation Center team and report directly to the Research Scientist. The small team contains a range of experience levels from entry, mid and senior.

Where is the role located?

The location of this role is based in Waltham, MA with some flexibility in being remote some days.  We require our interns to be onsite at a minimum, 3 days of the work week. We do not provide relocation assistance at this time.

What is the pay range?

The hourly pay range for this internship position is $20-$27 an hour. Our pay ranges are determined by your current level of education.
