Brandeis University Lab Technician in Waltham, Massachusetts

The Laboratory Technician supports the smooth functioning of the undergraduate chemistry teaching laboratories. Supports the two laboratory supervisors in managing the day-to-day operations of the labs and the timely and accurate preparation of chemicals, solutions and equipment for experiments. Assists the Laboratory supervisors in providing support, help and technical guidance to teaching assistants in chemistry laboratory courses, keeping an updated list of chemicals and equipment inventories, ensuring and enforcing proper safety procedures in the laboratory. Follows hazardous waste safety instructions to collect and dispose of all chemical waste in the teaching laboratories. Essential Job Functions: Support technical functions of the chemistry teaching laboratories during academic year semesters and summer sessions. Prepare experimental setups in teaching laboratories on a weekly basis. Put away extra equipment and supplies after each week experiment. Maintain clean laboratory spaces in the teaching labs (student benches, side benches, shelves and hoods) and in the preparatory room. Participate in the end of semesters lab cleanup tasks. (60%) Assist Lab Supervisors in maintaining all equipment, instrumentation and computers in working order. Be trained in the operation of all teaching lab equipment and ensure proper maintenance of it. Ensure that the laboratory operates under up-to-date safety standards. Follow hazardous waste safety instructions to collect and to prepare chemical waste from the teaching labs for disposal. Aid in maintenance of chemical inventory for the chemistry teaching laboratories. (20%) Assists Lab Supervisors in supporting TA?s as needed. Provide support and help and technical guidance to teaching assistants and to instructors using the teaching laboratory facilities. (10%) Assists Lab Supervisors in ordering, restocking and organizing teaching lab supplies. (5%) Work directly with the general and organic chemistry lab instructors and help them resolve technical problems as they arise. Fully support remote (online) laboratory sessions if needed by helping in design of the lab, resolving technical issues, training TAs and teaching sections and grading. (80%-100%) when labs are run only remotely) Preparation, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Bachelor's degree in chemistry, and/or other relevant training and coursework. Specific knowledge of inorganic, organic and analytical chemistry and the associated experimental and laboratory methods. Prior laboratory experience in either a research or teaching environment is highly desirable. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
