National Grid is hiring for a Director, New England Pricing, for our Regulatory department in Waltham, MA. This is a Hybrid Role.

Job Purpose

The purpose of this job is to lead the New England Pricing group. Overall responsibilities include developing rate design and pricing strategy for each retail operating utility in Massachusetts. The job requires detailed understanding and knowledge of retail rate making, tariff administration, retail contract pricing, and commodity pricing. Responsibilities include the strategic development of pricing and cost recovery proposals and tariff development, driving performance in the regulatory arena to accomplish the utility’s strategic goals, working with the New England Revenue Requirements team to collaborate in the development of proposals involving revenue requirements issues, providing guidance and support to the business in tariff interpretation and application, ensuring adequate communication and processing of all rate changes, along with ensuring all tariffs, commodity cost adjustments, and retail pricing filings are made with state agencies on time and accurately. The leader of this effort is required to contribute to the development and implementation of pricing mechanisms that reflect the company’s regulatory strategy as well as the regulator’s initiatives and recovers all appropriate costs. The role provides strategic and tactical oversight of tariff development and compliance, tariff interpretation and consultation, rate case support, and revenue and customer bill impact analyses on a recurring and ad hoc basis in support of company initiatives and decision-making. The role supports the VP, NE Regulation, as needed, providing advice and counsel in various regulatory matters as well as the completion of new assignments as requested. For a transition period, the job oversees the group’s successful transition of the responsibilities of Rhode Island pricing work to PPL subsequent to the sale of The Narragansett Electric Company to PPL under a Transition Services Agreement.

Key Accountabilities

  • Oversee the New England Pricing function and ensure all filings prepared by this group are made accurately and on time

  • Create regulatory pricing strategy that aligns with overall corporate strategy

  • Develops innovate approaches to all aspects of rate design and pricing functionality

  • Oversees internal and external pricing expert witnesses in rate cases and other regulatory proceedings

  • Point of contact and company representative at state regulatory agencies on pricing matters

  • Ensure consistency with company strategy across commodities

  • Collaborates with external stakeholders on pricing matters, i.e., utility commission representatives

  • Identify resource needs to ensure adequate staffing is available to accomplish assignments

Knowledge and Experience

Any candidate for the position must be able to demonstrate a track record of achievement in the financial field, have flexibility of mind, and be willing to undertake a diverse range of activities.

  • At least 15 years of experience in the regulated utility industry, preferably in the area of regulation, rates, and/or pricing matters.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of utility rate design, tariff administration, retail pricing, and commodity pricing.

  • Experience managing a team of professional staff which performs a variety of tasks.

  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills and good business judgment through actual experience that will allow for the contribution towards developing innovative solutions and their implementation.

  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, both written and oral, to establish a high level of confidence with more senior management and regulatory agencies.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and effective planning and execution ability.

  • Proven track record of effectively managing teams.

  • Strong analytical and commercial skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, accounting, or engineering. A Master’s degree in business is preferred. Relevant work experience is a substitute for field of study.

Job Dimensions

  • Significant revenue and earnings impact for the Massachusetts operating utilities, responsible for setting the strategy and establishing the mechanisms to recover all costs

  • Works collaboratively with VP, New England Regulation and Retail Regulatory Strategy Directors in the development of policy and strategy

  • Responsible for overseeing the completion of detailed and complicated financial analysis

  • 10 direct reports

  • Travel to the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities in Boston
