American Outdoor Brands Corporation Quality Inspector in Springfield, Massachusetts

Engineering Technician will be responsible for carrying out component testing complying with Smith & Wesson procedures. Timely and accurate completion of all related documentation is a key part of the role. Personnel will also ensure that inspection instruments and equipment are maintained to a safe and compliant standard.


Essential duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform inspection of component parts using a variety of inspection and measurement tools such as optical comparators, calipers, micrometers, CMM and vision scope.

  • Evaluate inspection results for compliance to specification.

  • Perform First Article inspection of parts by interpreting drawings which include GD&T.

  • Recognize problems that might affect the quality or integrity of the product and communicate problems.

  • Facilitate calibration and routine daily/weekly instrument maintenance to ensure accuracy of results.

  • Identify Lean manufacturing opportunities for continuous process improvement and suggest alternatives and solutions to problems.

  • Initiate changes to current Inspection Procedures.

  • Train other QC technicians and/ or temporary technicians.

  • Update reports, documents and metrics as necessary for quality tracking and improvement.

  • Perform other duties assigned by management.


  • Trade/Vocational Degree 0r ASQ Certification and/or minimum of 2 years' experience with Inspection.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Familiarity with routine instrumentation and inspection equipment

  • Understanding of Statistical Process Control (SPC)

  • Strong knowledge of GD&T

  • CNC knowledge a plus

  • Ability to build solid working relationships that enhance collaboration and cooperation with others.

  • Ability to prioritize daily/weekly work assignments to meet goals.

  • Ability to multitask and pay attention to detail


  • Must have a good command of the English language and be able to communicate both orally and in writing.


  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, statistical tools and related software


Standing, sitting, stooping and squatting can be expected along with lifting or with other means transfer of tooling, parts, containers and raw materials. Lifting requirement of 30 Lbs. Specific vision abilities required may include close vision, distance vision, peripheral and depth perception and ability to focus


  • Safety glasses with side shields when on factory floor

  • The use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when a job task(s) is being completed in or around your assigned department or in another department, this includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwear

  • All employees are required to apply ergonomic correctness to all job tasks

  • May be required depending on position:

  • Annual vision update in Medical Department

  • Involvement in the hearing conservation program

  • Involvement in the lead surveillance program

  • Wearing of safety certified shoes/boots

  • Participation in the stretching program


The performance of this position normally requires exposure to typical manufacturing areas that under certain conditions may require the use of personal protective equipment such as Safety Glasses with Side Shields and hearing protection. .Primary environment: Temperature of work area may be affected by outside temperatures and machining.
