American Outdoor Brands Corporation Plant Metallurgist in Springfield, Massachusetts
The Metallurgist will provide high level technical knowledge for metallurgical understanding of critical processes or products.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor of Science in metallurgy, material science, or mechanical engineering -- advanced degree preferred
Minimum 6-8 years of hands-on, manufacturing/metals industry experience
Must possess and demonstrate superior skills in material structural analysis and their relations to mechanical properties
Experience in failure analysis and prevention
Competencies and Skills:
Must be able to communicate in English verbally and in writing (basic verbal instructions, simple written memos and instructions)
Working knowledge of atmospheric, vacuum, and salt methods of heat treatment
Experience with forging, metal finishing, MIM, PM, castings, and injection molding
A genuine belief in continuous improvement and disciplined processes, with a willingness to analyze, challenge and change processes, if needed, to create a more efficient environment and culture or related discipline
Possess the ability to influence individuals and groups at all levels of our organization with strong interpersonal skills
Ability to foster change, promote and implement improvement -- lead by example
Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, statistical tools and related software
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage daily activities and tasks of Metallurgy lab.
Analyze macro and microstructures of both ferrous and nonferrous materials
Perform first article metallurgical inspections on all new product components
Work with all internal business units as well as external suppliers, providing in-depth technical expertise
Develop new or improve upon existing metallurgical processes
Provide and manage failure analysis utilizing internal equipment or by seeking external lab assistance
Monitor and provide problem solving assistance to the heat treat, forging, and finishing departments
Work closely with product engineering with new designs and materials
Write technical reports for all levels of the organizational management structure
Provide incoming level inspections for all raw material or related parts
Assure metallurgical and operating processes are in control and capable of meeting the needs of internal and external clients
Maintain up to date knowledge of best industry practices in metallurgy, manufacturing, and quality
Perform all forms of NDT
Develop new materials and coatings for future products
Requires up to 5% travel

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:
Within any of our facilities, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lighting. Work environment is similar to most manufacturing and distribution operations. May be exposed to excessive noise, temperatures, hazards associated with working around moving machinery, work in confined quarters, exposure to vibrations and shop lighting, continuous exposure to hot temperatures, may be humid, odors, dust, continuous exposure to mechanical hazards, and occasional exposure to chemical hazards.
The following Personal Protective Equipment is required:
- Safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection required when on manufacturing floor
The use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when a job task(s) is being completed in or around your assigned department or in another department, this includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwear.
