Formulation Chemist Manager

Job Summary : The Formulation Chemist Manager is responsible for the testing, research, development, formulation, and commercialization of liquid soaps, sanitizers, and surface cleaners and other forms of surfactant and cleaning systems. This position is responsible for supporting all scientific aspects of skincare and non-skincare global formulations and the coordination of the company’s strategic goals with that of safe and practical systems. The position will be responsible for up to three direct reports.

Responsibilities:

· Perform basic and fundamental research, concept development, new product development, process development, and commercialization of liquid soaps, sanitizers, surface cleaners, and other relevant commercial formulations.

· Ensure the smooth transfer of current and new knowledge of formulation and technology to manufacturing and other business units.

· Design scientific experiments that yield usable and actionable information.

· Perform and record detailed physical property measurements and assessments of storage stability under a range of temperature conditions in accordance with the relevant study plans and guidelines for each formulation.

· Compile, analyze, interpret, and document test results.

· Work to the principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

· Create standard operating procedures and train laboratory technicians in the use of SOPs and other methods.

· Work with consultants and 3 rd parties to develop and implement innovative products.

· Deliver new consumer-centric product concepts to the business on a standard cadence.

  • Effectively work in cross-functional teams across different time zones with members from product development, project management, quality, regulatory, manufacturing, application engineering, process engineering, brand, marketing, and sales.

· Perform technical report writing and presentations.

· Provide guidance in the preparation of samples for analysis and physical testing.

· Create and maintain various data bases.

· Recognize sources of problems; absorb new information easily; expose gaps in logic and contradictions; develop effective solutions to technical roadblocks.

· Perform all laboratory work in a safe manner and comply with all regulations, safety precautions, PPE requirements, and 5S processes.

· Data mine using statistical analysis and reporting software.

· Understand and appropriately apply information from Safety Data Sheets.

Qualifications:

· Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

· Specific degree in Cosmetic or Formulation Sciences preferred.

· Minimum of 10 years of successful product development in the relevant area.

· Intimate knowledge of Regulatory Compliance relative to governing directives in multiple countries, especially Europe, Canada, and USA.

· Some experience working in SAP, Windchill PLM, and FileMaker relational database or other SAP and Lab Management Software.

· Aerosol familiarity.

· Broad range of experience in formulation preparation and testing in the laboratory.

· A sound understanding of the principles of GLP and GMP.

· Ability to work autonomously on multiple projects as needed.

· Highly adaptable to frequent changes in direction.

· Liquid soap formulation and application subject matter expert with formulation experience.

· Detailed knowledge on stability testing of liquid soap and hand sanitizer.

· Ability to write SOPs for all areas of liquid soap and sanitizer development, testing, and manufacturing.

· Deep knowledge of ingredients used in the formulation of liquid soaps and hand sanitizers.

· Green Seal and NSF certification requirements as well as some knowledge on OTC products is a plus.

· Ability to effectively track and communicate project status and updates.

· Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of conveying technical information in a clear and thorough manner.

· Proven ability to invent and innovate, and strong ability to design and implement experiments.

· Professional laboratory skills are essential.

· Fluent in English.
