Statement of Duties

Performs skilled electrical work at the journeyman level. Installs, tests, repairs and maintains electrical circuits, wiring systems, fixtures, appliances and equipment. Troubleshoots and repairs faulty electrical wiring, defective electrical equipment and machinery such as motors, generators, transformers, switches, sockets, etc. Inspects and tests circuits and fixtures to locate broken wires, loose connections, blown fuses, faulty switches, grounds, shorts and other defects. Uses common hand tools and electrical OHM test equipment such as meters, voltmeters, ammeters, growlers, multimeters, and other test equipment. May remove, replace, and repair electrical parts. May maintain storage batteries. Performs supervision over helpers and apprentices. Perform other duties as assigned.

Recommended Qualifications

Must have knowledge of trade practices and safety regulations.

Must be able to make oral and written reports of work performed.

Must possess a current valid Massachusetts Journeymen’s License.

Must possess a current valid Massachusetts Class D driver’s license.

Work Environment

This position primarily works indoors, but may be subject to outdoor environmental conditions, including wet, hot and cold, and exposure to fumes, dust and air contaminants. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant. Work may require some agility and physical strength, such as moving in or about construction sites or over rough terrain, or standing or walking most of the work period.

Physical Skills

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, crawl, sit, talk, move about, hear and speak. May be required to work in restricted spaces, from a prone position, and/or under difficult lighting and access conditions. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. Employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions especially in emergency repair situations. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and greater than 50 pounds using appropriate equipment.

Motor Skills

While performing the duties, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or new skills; work under deadlines with constant interruptions; and interact with City staff. The position also requires balancing, pushing, pulling, grasping and feeling to complete tasks.

Visual Skills

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee is required to use properly use such safety equipment as is appropriate to the work to prevent injury to self or others.

Hours: Full-Time

Salary: $1,153.28 weekly plus artisan pay, plus benefits

Union: SMEA B

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Mandatory Requirements: This is a safety-sensitive position. Must pass a driving history check and pre-employment drug screening / physical prior to employment.
