Medical Devices & Diagnostics Global Services, LLC, a division of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies, is recruiting for a Director, Digital Surgery Platform Architecture. This position can be based out of any of the following locations- Somerville, NJ; West Chester, PA; Raynham, MA; Cincinnati, OH or Irvine, CA and reports to the Senior Director, Medical Devices Architecture.

The Medical Device Enterprise Architecture organization works closely with the Commercial, Supply Chain, R&D organization and innovation groups to deliver innovative technology solutions to advance product development and medical device solutions to transform global health.

We are looking for a visionary software engineering leader who is interested in leading, designing, developing, and fielding advanced software solutions that innovate and have direct impact to Patients and Medical Devices.

The role requires an in-depth knowledge of existing advanced software engineering practices and approaches including Software as a Service, Internet of Things, Robotics, Virtual Reality, Big Data/Visualization and Multi-Cloud. The ability to influence and convince others, leadership and creativity to invent, customize and work in a multidisciplinary environment to drive business solutions.

This role is represented as a core member of the IT Medical Devices Architecture Leadership Team.

This leader will demonstrate proven expertise leading teams to understand business strategies, envision and prioritize business capabilities, and design product enablement solutions that involve creating and providing business and technology implementation road maps and technology architecture recommendations, utilizing tools and techniques to develop and implement project phases.

The new Director must bring strong thought leadership around software architecture, design and strategy experience while seeking out opportunities for simplification, and capability enablement; Finally, the ability to collaborate and influence other directors, executives and the team and develop a strong leadership pipeline is an important factor for success.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Director Digital Surgery Platform Architecture for MDD&D will have end-to-end global responsibility for creating and aligning a Digital Surgery Technology Strategy with strategic business intent and establishing the technology capabilities for Enterprise-level business solutions

  • Developing strategy; as well as writing, communicating, and presenting cogently; to and/or for all levels of industry audiences, clients and internal staff and management

  • documenting effectively, using non-technical business terms and vocabulary that will be clearly understood by all users and co-workers, and coordinating, facilitating and making presentations

  • Provides enterprise architecture direction and guidance; ensures alignment with best of breed technologies and J&J Technology Standards; Drives consistency and quality of the Architecture artifacts (business process architecture, data architecture, etc.)

  • Identifying and addressing client needs: build solid relationships with clients; develop an awareness of customer’s needs/ services; communicate with the client in an organized and knowledgeable manner; deliver clear requests for information; demonstrate flexibility in prioritizing and completing tasks; and communicate and manage potential conflicts;

  • Leading staff to generate a vision, to establish direction and motivate members, as well as create an atmosphere of trust, leverage diverse views, coach staff, to encourage improvement and innovation

  • Collaboration with Enterprise Technical Architects to create and maintain strategic roadmaps, principles, standards and reference architectures

  • Engagement with business executives to define, understand and document business requirements and desired business capabilities, iterating new business capabilities into the future-state business architecture

  • Maintenance of software architecture structures from business capability to process to organization, emphasizing profiles of customer events and their relationship to business capabilities;

  • Guidance provided to Project/Solution Architects to develop project level requirements and establish compliance with software architecture, enterprise and functional area strategic roadmaps

  • Establishment of software interoperability across functional domains

  • Alignment with internal teams to verify budget and resource commitment to support roadmaps (via architecture dependencies and prioritization)


  • A M.S. or M.A. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent technical degree

  • A minimum of 10+ years’ experience in software design and architecture experience.

  • Proven experience in best practices in consulting, solution development, architecture and delivery.

  • This includes proven success in roles within an enterprise software firm or Big 4 leading and supporting teams that services clients and expertise of these areas.

  • We are looking for an Architect with a broad understanding of Digital Technology and how it can be applied to move our healthcare solutions forward. Candidates should possess deep knowledge across technologies and have a strong background in software & hardware engineering, Multi Cloud Computing (AWS, Azure, etc.), Internet of Things, MicroServices, Streaming Technologies, Integration Patterns and Open Source Software.

  • Expert knowledge in software analysis/architecture, technical requirements, and design & development.

  • Practical programming experience developing software for a commercial product, ideally involving significant capital and medical equipment.

  • Experience leading a software team to design and develop sophisticated software.

  • Experience working with other technical leads in a complex environment with multiple concurrent projects is a strong plus.

  • Experience integrating codebase(s) with multiple provenance and different features, characteristics, and deployment platforms.

  • Expert-level knowledge of embedded, multi-platform, and distributed software systems.

  • Track record with multiple deployment platforms, from high-end microprocessors running full-featured operating systems, down to bare-metal embedded code deployed on lightweight microcontrollers.

  • Expert knowledge of distributed systems, interprocessor/interconnect schemes and protocols, and network programming (IP, TCP, UDP, etc).

  • Hands-on experience developing real-time software (expert knowledge of one or more real-time OS strongly preferred)

  • Expert-level knowledge of one or more operating systems (multiple is a plus) and operating system features in general

  • Expert knowledge of software applications and utility frameworks

  • Experienced with build, deployment, and configuration management systems for heterogeneous, multi-platform software. Must have expert-level skills with software development tools (CM, bug tracking, source control etc.) and development process.

  • Hands-on knowledge of software development. Must be well-versed in object-oriented design

Preferred qualifications:

  • Understanding of medical device industry, clinical anatomy, and competitor products. Knowledge of other related disciplines including cross functional fields and market competition.

  • Hands-on Experience with FDA regulated (62304) Software Development

  • Expert in embedded software development. Strong working knowledge of integrating software and electronics

  • Communicating with physical devices over low-level data links (e.g. SPI, I2C, serial/UART)

  • Debugging hardware/software challenges using standard tools and equipment

  • Design and architecture of device drivers (both bare-metal and OS)

  • Controls and/or robotic systems a strong plus

  • Knowledge of surgery/MIS

  • ISO 60601, 14971 and TIR45. Well-versed in R&D, product development, and clinical/regulatory process.

  • Must have experience in developing strategies and roadmaps with IT architecture focus (e.g. technology blueprints, business process harmonization blueprints, systems integration maps, etc.).

  • Must be adept at handling complexity and ambiguity.

  • Must be skilled in building strong cross-functional partnerships.

  • Experience with leading multi-company teams and global efforts are preferred. Previous people management experience is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability for a rapid understanding of business processes, and their technology implications.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and articulate business requirements, direction, and initiatives from an enterprise-level perspective.

  • Demonstrated ability to explain complex technology topics in easy-to-understand terms.

  • Proven ability to manage team within a matrixed structure. Must have the ability to influence without direct authority.

  • Demonstrated understanding and management of financial processes and results related to projects, departmental budgets, and enterprise.

  • Have a deep technical knowledge of information technology relevant to major business processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive standards utilization and leverage technology solutions across the J&J enterprise.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and effectively apply technology expertise in a rapidly changing business and technology environment.

  • Experience working in a cross-functional environment is required.

  • TOGAF and ITIL certification preferred.

  • Experience and practice in architecture preferred.

  • Searching and analyzing large and complex data sets, conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses
