The Design Engineer will design new architectural indoor lighting solutions with a focus on solid state lighting technology.
Duties and Responsibilities
Lead the New Products Development (NPD) team to deliver new products per established parameters, including performance, budget and schedule.
Design and evaluate products, parts, or processes for cost efficiency and reliability.
Work with marketing, sourcing, and the production staff at various facilities to ensure that all projects meet internal and external customer requirements, including performance, schedule and budget.
Request and evaluate testing (thermal, photometric etc.) as needed for third party certification (UL, CSA, DLC, etc.).
Utilize Solid Edge CAD software for solid model design and drawing creation.
Utilize SAP business software, including bill of material creation and variant configurator input for modular bills of material management.
Participate NPD Tollgate process and tools to deliver new products, on time, within specification.
This position reports to the Director of Engineering or Engineering Manager.
Internally, this position interfaces with Engineers, Engineering Services, Product Management, Manufacturing, Technical Support, and Warranty Services.
Skills and Experience
Must be computer literate.
Proficiency in various CAD packages including AutoCAD, Solid Edge or other solid modeling software, Microsoft Office package (especially Excel and Access) a plus.
Must possess strong organizational skills and strong oral and written communication skills.
Strong decision making and problem solving skills.
Conceptual design creativity required.
Low volume, high mix manufacturing experience a plus.
Design experience of parts and assemblies using glass, polycarbonate /acrylic lenses, optical quality aluminum, extruded aluminum, cast aluminum, injection molded plastics, or fabricated steel is also a plus.
SSL,Optical design and Thermal modeling experience is desired.
SAP and Variant Configurator experience a plus.
Travel occasionally required, mostly within North America, but can include travel to Asia or other foreign locales
