Sherwood Lumber Operations Manager in Palmer, Massachusetts

JOB TITLE: Operations Manager EMPLOYER: Sherwood Lumber Corporation DEPARTMENT: Operations REPORTS TO: Vice President of Operations EFFECTIVE DATE: 10/1/2024 SUMMARY: The Operations Manager will be responsible for overseeing site operations at our Palmer, MA facility. This includes production management, quality control, customer service, and safety. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Production Management: Plan, organize, and oversee all aspects of production activities to ensure efficient and timely manufacturing of building products. Implement strategies to optimize production processes, minimize downtime, and maximize output while adhering to quality standards. Develop and maintain production schedules, monitor progress, and adjust as necessary to meet customer demand and on-time delivery. Quality Control: Establish and maintain comprehensive quality control procedures to ensure that all products meet or exceed FIFO and customer expectations. Conduct regular site inspections and audits to assess product quality and identify areas for improvement. Implement corrective actions and preventive measures to address quality issues and minimize defects. Operations Management: Provide leadership and direction to the operations team and maintenance personnel. Coordinate with other departments, such as logistics and sales, to ensure customer requirements. Monitor and manage overtime hours to optimize workforce productivity while controlling labor costs. Develop strategies to minimize the need for overtime through efficient workforce planning and resource allocation. Collaborate with site supervisors to address warehouse management and commodity issues, ensuring proper storage, handling, and distribution of materials. Monitor inventory levels of commodities and coordinate with procurement teams to ensure adequate stock levels. Implement procedures for efficient warehouse operations and inventory control. Partner with human resources to resolve worker problems, complaints, or grievances. First in First Out (FIFO) Management Implement FIFO principles to manage inventory and ensure the timely rotation of raw materials and finished goods. Monitor inventory levels, track expiration dates, and minimize waste through efficient inventory management practices. Customer Service: Collaborate with the sales team to understand customer needs and expectations and ensure production schedules align with customer demand. Address customer inquiries, complaints, and quality issues promptly and effectively to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction. Safety Compliance: Enforce safety procedures and policies and ensure a safe work environment free of hazards. Ensure compliance with OSHA and other government agencies. Ensure proper compliance and execution of the HAZMAT program. Ensure associates are following safety rules and are demonstrating safe working behavior. Lead monthly safety committee meetings. Timely investigate and complete a thorough accident investigation report with corrective action input and have an action plan developed to correct safety issues. This includes taking the injured employee to receive the proper medical attention. Conduct monthly site safety inspections and conduct weekly toolbox safety talks. QUALIFICATIONS: Five to Seven years of experience in operations management, preferably in the building products industry or related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Computer skills required: Microsoft Office Suite; ERP System; and Project Management System. Other skills required: Proven leadership skills with the ability to motivate and mentor cross-functional teams. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
