Saint-Gobain’s Performance Ceramics and Refractories business is looking for driven, talented, and energetic researchers to join the team at our North American Research and Development Center. The researcher will lead innovation projects and across our engineered ceramics portfolio including aerospace, chemical, energy, industrial ceramics, and defense applications. As a Senior Research Engineer, the candidate will research and develop new technologies and test methods to improve the performance of our materials as well as our understanding of their behavior in application. The candidate is also expected to be seen as a key contributor and a technical resource to other group members who helps develop others within the group. Phases of development include exploratory research, pilot, scale-up, and implementation of R&D processes into manufacturing .
The position holder will be expected to lead R&D projects in the areas of high temperature, high strength, abrasion resistant, impact resistant, and corrosion resistant ceramic materials including SiC (sintered, reaction bonded, nitride, etc.), Al2O3, nitrides, and oxynitrides. They will also collaborate effectively with R&D colleagues in a transversal team, partnering in projects with application and materials processing experts. This role will also have strong interactions with market managers, production engineers, and external customers. The person will be expected to create and execute project plans, design and conduct experiments, analyze data, and present findings in written and oral formats. The position holder is also expected to play a role in proposing projects and programs sponsored by the R&D direction of the group. In addition to her/his primary projects, the position holder will be expected to support projects led by others.
Extensively utilize research and/or project experiences and broad expertise to develop experiments that capture the essential physics and interactions between ceramics and clients’ application environments
Interface with various stakeholders including R&D colleagues, clients, market managers, and plant engineers to develop technical approach, cost estimates, and time schedule.
Stay aware of new technology applications and competitive uses of same in work with materials, products and processes, and in development of new knowledge.
Manage multiple projects simultaneously, on time, well documented and within budget to meet business and customer objectives.
Contribute new ideas to rejuvenate the R&D project portfolio and conduct exploratory research work
Demonstrate open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility.
Seek out others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.
Be able to communicate technically with internal competencies and university collaborators and utilize knowledge to advance projects and identify productive synergies.
Conduct administrative and technical aspects of role in a largely autonomous manner, requiring technical assistance required on only the more difficult problems.
Continuously and reliably carry projects through to completion.
Keep project teams on track with project timeline and budget.
Be able to communicate and use business language in an industrial environment and coordinate with plant operations.
Be able to fill in standard deliverables for project management through interactions with internal contacts outside of R&D
Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience including but not limited to: expertise in a technical field relevant to the position, demonstration of familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation, IP, Patents, and technical documents.

BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years’ experience, or MS with 3+ years of experience, or entry level PhD in Material Science, Ceramic Science, Mechanical Engineering, or other related disciplines, plus demonstrated technical judgment/accomplishments.
