City of Northampton DPW Maintenance Technician in Northampton, Massachusetts

DEFINITION This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of Plants, buildings, equipment and grounds of either Water Treatment Plant or Waste Water Treatment Plant. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Repairs and maintains facility machinery, pump stations and other equipment as directed; records maintenance and repair activity. Cleans and maintains all Plant buildings and ancillary structures. Performs upkeep of all Plant and ancillary structure grounds, including snow and trash removal and mowing. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on all equipment. Assists in flood control operations as needed. Understands and follows all safety regulations. Provides assistance to other Divisions as directed. Participates in snow removal operations. Performs similar or related work as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Experience and Licensing - High school diploma or equivalent; one year of experience in work related to the maintenance and repair of equipment or facilities in an industrial setting; equivalent combination of education and experience. CDL Class B and MA Hoisting Engineer 2B required at time of hire. Other licenses are required after date of hire and are defined in the IUOE, Local #98 Union contract. Knowledge, Ability and Skills - Knowledge: Industrial mechanical, electrical, plumbing and hydraulic repair and maintenance knowledge. Abilities: Ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to perform strenuous physical labor and work effectively; ability to read and understand blueprints. Skills: Mathematical skills; mechanical, repair and maintenance skills; welding and metal fabrication skills. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS Physical Skills: Work requires moderate physical strength and effort daily, such as lifting heavy objects, carrying the object(s) and stacking them or moving them. In addition, pulling, pushing, standing or walking for the full work day may also be involved. Motor Skills: The work may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination. The operation of heavy trucks or equipment may be required for long periods of time. Visual Skills: Essential position functions require the ability to operate a motor vehicle and specialized heavy motor equipment. In addition, essential position functions, including reading meters, require good close, distant, and peripheral vision and depth perception at correctable ranges MISC. INFORMATION One (1) Full time vacancy - 40 hours per week 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Hourly range: \$19.74-\$25.58 WORK ENVIRONMENT The nature of duties may involve continuous presence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as considerable noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease. Includes work under typical shop conditions, outdoor work in all weather conditions or work in confined spaces. Work may require emergency response outside of normal business hours. Travel during adverse weather conditions may be required. Additional \$1.00 per hour stipend paid for CDL B license for every hour worked. Employee must be comfortable around unpleasant materials and odors. Full benefits per the Local #98 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
