About the team

The Design for scale team is focused on providing the structure, expertise, oversight, processes and tools to allow MSP organization to deploy safe automation solutions at scale. These solutions are designed to improve the customer experience, lower the operating cost, eliminate waste and allow Amazon to maintain its competitive advantage in the market.

The team is comprised of Hardware Engineering, Technical Program Management, Advanced Quality Planning, Safety & Regulatory Compliance, Reliability, Strategic Sourcing and Design for Assembly. The team provides core support to the entire MSP product teams and collaborates at a high level with business partners throughout the FTR network.

MSP-DfS is focused on two parallel manufacturing activities. We are working with existing suppliers to ensure on-time delivery of machines to support the 2024 POR, for Universal Robotic Labeler (URL) (Sewtec), Flexible EcoPac (CMC), SmartPaper (ATS), Universal Item Sorter (UIS) (OPEX), and the other general availability (GA) products.

In parallel, we are working to scale manufacturing and supply chain to support deployment of products in 2025 and beyond. Our current supply base, comprised of third-party machine design partners, is on track to deliver 2024 machines to meet POR, with some risk on a portion of URL demand detailed below. However, they lack sufficient capacity or established supply chains to scale to meet 2025 demand. They have not provided detailed build-to-print (BtP) packages to enable the rapid transition to CMs. MSP-DfS and Hamme are refining BtP packages to enable the manufacturing transition to CMs who can scale. We are evaluating supplier and supply chain risks, identifying alternative sources, and establishing a supply chain to support future CMs. We will use in-process BtP and supply chain documentation to select CM partner(s) who are capable of supporting MSP programs in Q1 2024.
