Town of Dartmouth Electrical Inspector in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts

Both part time and full time positions are available....Monday through Friday Technical and inspection work related to the enforcement and interpretation of the Massachusetts Supervision: Works under the general direction of the Building Commissioner. Performs varied and detailed inspection duties of a technical nature requiring the exercise of considerable judgement in ensuring compliance with proper standards and the enforcement of pertinent laws and regulations. Job Environment: Some work is performed under typical office conditions; some work is performed in the field with exposure to variable weather conditions and the hazards associated with construction sites and electrical wires; may spend significant portion of work day outdoors. Operates an automobile, various hand tools, and standard office equipment. Makes frequent contact with contractors, builders, electricians and other members of the building community, other towns departments and boards, property owners, and the general public. Errors could result in delay and loss of service, damage to property, endanger public safety, have legal and/or financial implications, and cause adverse public relations. Essential Functions: Inspects and witnesses tests of new and existing wiring and electrical installations. Issues permits for electrical installations, alteration and repairs; inspects all electrical installations in process of construction, alteration or repair for which permits are issued. Investigates complaints of alleged violations and takes appropriate action as required. Examines plans, advises builders, electricians; makes field inspections; attends meetings and hearings. Coordinates inspections and appointments; responds to phone and mail inquiries. Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates. Education and Experience: High school graduation and five years? experience as a iourneyman electrician or master electrician; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Thorough knowledge of wiring theory and practices and of state and local laws and regulations pertaining to electrical work. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and plans; ability to prepare necessary diagrams; ability to read and enforce regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially. Ability to maintain complete and accurate inspection records and to prepare reports. Ability to communicate efficiently in oral and written form. Physical Requirements: Occasional moderate physical effort demanded in making inspections. Major portion of shift spent in the field. Frequently required to climb and reach. May be required to walk and stand approximately 6 hours per day.
