State of Massachusetts Invertebrate Fisheries Seasonal Technician in New Bedford, Massachusetts

The Department of Fish & Game works to preserve the state's natural resources and people's right to conservation of those resources, as protected by Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution. To carry out this mission, the Department exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife species, plants, and natural communities, as well as the habitats that support them. The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries serves Massachusetts’ citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats, while providing sustainable fisheries related recreational and commercial opportunities. The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries seeks qualified applicants for a Fisheries Technician (Contracted Seasonal Employee). The seasonal technician will assist MADMF Invertebrate Fisheries Program personnel with the ventless lobster trap survey, and at-sea and shoreside biological sampling of commercially important invertebrates (lobster, whelk, crabs, horseshoe crabs). The incumbent will assist other MADMF Program personnel as needed. A cover letter and resume expressing your interest in this position must be submitted as part of the application process.  These documents must be specifically attached “as relevant” to the requisition for which you are applying. * *DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * 1. Carries out at-sea biological sampling on commercial fishing vessels. 2. Conducts, under supervision, biological surveys in coastal waters, including work on beaches and small craft in bays and estuaries. 3. Operates, with training, small craft as “top person,” for divers. 4. Records and organizes data, including computer coding and data entry for computer analysis. 5. Assists in technical and non-technical writing of reports, and graphical presentations of data. 6. Operates and maintains field equipment including specialized environmental data recording instruments, sampling gear, and motor vehicles, including small boats and trailers. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE(List knowledges, skills, abilities): 1. Knowledge of fisheries biology and management. 2. Experience collecting data at sea aboard research vessels or commercial fishing vessels 3. Working knowledge of computer word processing and spreadsheet software including MSWORD and EXCEL and familiarity with basic statistical techniques for summarizing biological data. 4. Familiarity with sampling gear commonly employed in the field of fisheries science and associated disciplines. 5. Ability to identify marine coastal fish and shellfish. 6. Ability to compile, analyze, and present data in tabular and graphical form. 7. Ability to communicate effectively with fishermen, bait dealers, other scientists, and the public. 8. Ability to work outdoors in non-ideal conditions, sometimes in the middle of the night, and lift up to 50 lbs. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Knowledge of sampling design and application. 2. Experience working with or around pot/trap fishing gear. 3. Ability to navigate and operate small boats.  4. Experience working as or with SCUBA divers.  EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT AND SUBSTITUTIONS Full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, para-professional or technical experience in marine biology or fisheries management work.  Knowledge and experience in the fields of marine or fisheries biology, marine science, or oceanography. *SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: * Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s Class D license or equivalent license from the state in which you reside. REMARKS: This is a seasonal position, no benefits included - except earned sick leave.  The position has a start date of April 22, 2024 and will continue for six months.
