The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (MADMF)is accepting resumes and applications for the Seasonal Invertebrate Fisheries Sea Sampler (Contracted Seasonal position). The duration of the contact is estimated to begin March 7, 2021 through October 30, 2021. This seasonal position without benefits, with the exception of earned sick leave.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Seasonal Invertebrate Fisheries Sea Sampler will assist MADMF program personnel with 2 primary projects: the ventless lobster trap survey, and at-sea biological sampling of commercially important invertebrates (lobster, whelk, crabs). The incumbent will assist other MADMF Program personnel as needed.

  1. Carries out at-sea biological sampling on commercial fishing vessels.

  2. Conducts, under supervision, biological surveys in coastal waters, including work on beaches and small craft in bays and estuaries.

  3. Operates, with training, small craft as “top person,” for divers.

  4. Records and organizes data, including computer coding and data entry for computer analysis.

  5. Assists in technical and non-technical writing of reports, and graphical presentations of data.

  6. Operates and maintains field equipment including specialized environmental data recording instruments, sampling gear, and motor vehicles, including small boats and trailers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Knowledge of sampling design and application.

  2. Ability to navigate and operate small boats.

  3. Experience working as or with SCUBA divers.

EDUCATION

Applicants should have at least two years experience in marine biology or fisheries management work. Substitutions: A Bachelor’s or higher degree with a major in marine or fisheries biology, marine science, or oceanography may be substituted for the required experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s Class D license or equivalent license from the state in which you reside.
