The Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game works to preserve the state's natural resources and people's right to conservation of those resources, as protected by Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution. To carry out this mission, the Department exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife species, plants, and natural communities, as well as the habitats that support them. The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries serves Massachusetts’ citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats, while providing sustainable fisheries related recreational and commercial opportunities. A cover letter and resume must be submitted as part of the application process and attached “as relevant” to the requisition. * The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) seeks applicants for the position of Fisheries Habitat Technician (Fisheries Supervisor) to support the DMF in the following activities. / *This is a long-term seasonal position scheduled to end on June 30, 2022./ DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assists biologists in the field on research vessels and small craft with water sampling for eDNA and other field research and monitoring projects 2. Assists with maintenance and preparation of field and laboratory equipment 3. Organizes, filters and archives water samples for eDNA analysis 4. Enters data into Access and Excel databases 5. Files and organizes digital data including photos and videos 6. Performs literature reviews 7. Drafts, reviews and edits technical documents as needed 8. Assists other projects with conducting research as needed and when time permits 9. Demonstrates professionalism in words and actions and performs other duties as assigned PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Bachelors’ degree in an environmental science field (biology, geology, marine science, etc) 2. Experience compiling data in tabular and graphical form 3. Computer proficiency including a working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access, Google Earth and ArcGIS 4. Experience with operating and maintaining small motorized vessels in coastal waters under various weather conditions, including boat trailering 5. Good physical condition, ability to regularly lift 50lbs, and ability to work long hours in strenuous situations. Job will require some work on weekends and some longer/earlier/later than normal workdays 6. Ability to multi-task and prioritize 7. Ability to follow-through and complete tasks 8. Ability to follow guidelines and procedures 9. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON THE JOB: 1. Knowledge of the principles and practices of fisheries science, including marine fisheries habitats. 2. Familiarity of datasets and database systems utilized by the Division. 3. Familiarity with field sampling methodology and laboratory practices. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of acurrent and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s Class D license or equivalent license from the state in which you reside. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or technical experience in fisheries management work, fish hatchery work or fish culture work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in fisheries or wildlife management, marine science or fisheries, marine or wildlife biology may be substituted for the required experience.* Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
