State of Massachusetts Industrial Instructor II/Plumber - Where Assigned - Northern Sector in Milford, Massachusetts

Supervises inmates and civilian employees in the repair/installation and/or alters steam plumbing systems by cleaning sewer drains; by operating power tools, welding equipment, sewer cleaning machine hand tools, and plumbing equipment; by laying out, cutting and fitting material for welding; by packing joints, valves, and pumps; by cutting and threading pipes; by caulking and packing lead joints, valves and pumps; by replacing seals in water closets; by cleaning filters; by unplugging sinks, toilets, and drains; and by insulating heat tracing wires and/or piping to ensure that equipment is in proper working order and to meet agency needs. Inspects buildings to determine need for repairs. Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, instructions or layouts to understand construction work to be done. Knowledge of the types and uses of materials used in plumbing such as steel, malleable, cast and galvanized iron; clay; glass, etc. Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment used in plumbing such as blowtorches, soldering equipment, gauges, etc. Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing plumbing. Performs other duties as assigned.

Applicants must possess a Massachusetts Plumbers License.

Special Consideration will be given to applicants that have Pipefitters or Steamfitters License or can show a proven background in these areas.

Positions will be assigned within the Northern Region areas to include Shirley, Framingham, Gardner, and Concord.

Comments:

This is a Civil Service position. . Applicant must take and pass the next Civil Service examination for this title and your score must be reached on Civil Service List to be considered for a permanent appointment.The selected candidate will have to submit to a psychological and drug screening and must attend and pass a four (4) week Recruit Academy. Please note that salaries for union positions are determined according to the provisions of the respective collective bargaining agreement. The DOC urges bilingual applicants to apply.

Applicants must have no felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609. The Massachusetts Department of Correction shall not hire anyone who may have direct contact with offenders, who has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph. The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in industrial arts work, the major duties of which involved training or instructing, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in industrial arts may be substituted for the required experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
