State of Massachusetts Forensic Scientist III - Case Management Unit (Maynard) in Maynard, Massachusetts
The Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory in Maynard is seeking a Forensic Scientist III in the Case Management Unit (CMU) that will act as a liaison between the Crime Laboratory and outside agencies in order to provide technical assistance to case management related inquiries, exchange information vital to the processing of cases, and resolve any issues that may occur at any stage of analysis. _Duties:_ * Responsible for obtaining all materials and documentation required prior to clearing cases for assignment in Forensic Testing Sections. * Communicates with supervisors in all sections within the Crime Lab to resolve any potential technical/administrative issues prior to clearing cases for analysis. * Performs an initial review of all Forensic Biology cases submitted for analysis through assigned region. * Prioritize regionally assigned cases requiring Criminalistics examination and/or other testing based on requests from ADA’s, Investigators, and/or crime scene responders. * Prioritize regionally assigned cases requiring DNA analysis based on requests from ADA’s and Investigators. * Track funding for outsourcing and based on availability of funds coordinate with MA State Police (MSP) personnel and outside agencies to designate appropriate number and type of samples for outsourcing. * Assist with rush requests for analysis between investigators, attorneys, MSP management, and appropriate laboratory personnel across the Crime Lab. * Develop, review, revise, and follow protocols and procedures for all CMU duties as required. * Using recorded results from forensic analysis throughout the Crime Lab, develop Crystal reports that track the success rate of types of samples/analysis methods. * Coordinate with Crime Lab Management and Unit Supervisors to determine criteria for recorded results and modify as needed. * Coordinate with management, supervisors and external agencies to assign additional analysis for ongoing cases. * Responsible for answering and responding to CMU phone calls, email and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) web module regarding case related questions. * Prepare reports through the use of LIMS and other applicable software to monitor backlogs and track the progress of cases. * Assist with satellite laboratory requests for case file retrieval from central file storage. * Coordinate the transport of these files to the respective requesting laboratory for analysis. * Provide direct supervision to temporary employees, interns, and any other support staff assigned to case management. * Train staff in applicable duties and ensure assignments are being completed in accordance with Crime Lab policies and procedures. * Assign duties to staff as appropriate and ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner. * Filing of Crime Lab case files in storage areas. * Ensure subsequent paperwork received for a case is properly filed within the appropriate case file. * Assist with fulfilling discovery, freedom of information act (FOIA) and public record requests as needed. * Additional duties as assigned. * Incumbent will, on occasion travel to and work out of, various Crime Lab satellite locations throughout the Commonwealth. Minimum Entrance Requirements: * Applicants must have a Bachelors degree in the natural sciences, including Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Forensic Science, Pharmacology or Physics and (A) at least three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience as a bench chemist or forensic scientist in a crime laboratory or comparable setting and (B) full competence as a forensic analyst within an accredited laboratory in a relevant forensic science specialization, and documented experience in providing testimony as both an expert and material witness in legal proceedings, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. A Masters or higher degree in the natural sciences, including Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Forensic Science, Pharmacology or Physics may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.
