National Grid Grid Automation and Engineering Project Manager in Massachusetts
**About the Position:
Grid Automation and Engineering Project Manager will serve as the single point of contact during the deployment and installation of Distribution Automation solutions. They are the primary leader interfacing with internal and external partners regarding engineering, procurement and logistics for the distribution automation portfolio. This includes analysis and reporting on the project, weekly internal status reporting, and managing the efforts of the project team to meet the regulatory and contractual technical and support requirements. Responsible for managing the deployment and implementation of advanced distribution automation, volt/var optimization, advanced capacitor controls and advanced grid monitoring devices including schedules and budgets for electric delivery systems, and coordinating activities between all internal and external stakeholders. Analyze and monitor project financials and milestones, including cost-effective utilization of resources. Develop strategies for devices, applications and solutions and plans to mitigate “at-risk” projects.
This opportunity will require that you understand the procedures and expected system performance associated with the introduction of new application integration technologies. Primary responsibility is to ensure on-time project delivery, which requires a clear understanding of expectations and capabilities to act effectively as a team member. Take project leadership responsibility and plan work for others to meet project deadlines. Manages and prioritizes the project stream, working with internal customers to determine project definition and business requirements. Provides budget analysis, resource allocation and coordination of project activities that may be across functional areas within the organization. Assigns and monitors work of technical personnel, ensuring that project steps are in alignment with business objectives, on-time and within budget. Monitors reliability and any internal issues that appear as a result of the project.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Manage the implementation of all smart grid projects for electric delivery systems and coordinate activities between consultants, contractors, internal functions and other stakeholders;
Develop and manage project charters and schedules for grid automation projects related to electric delivery systems, and guide projects through all relevant stages;
Monitor and coordinate all grid automation project schedules, budgets and resources for the Business Unit (Electric Substation, and Distribution), to include personnel and system requirements from various groups;
Analyze project financials and monitor cost-effective utilization of resources;
Identify and develop strategies to mitigate or re-work “at-risk” projects to avoid cost overruns;
Review project loading to assess and plan for changes to project milestones, cost, budget and cash flows;
Coordinate and interface with various divisions to ensure deliverables are understood and completed in a timely manner;
Collaborate on standards for work flow of planning, engineering and construction phases of projects;
Identify and provide recommendations for best-practices in technology and application of grid automation projects;
Participate and assist in the capital budget development, estimation and coordination of smart grid projects including equipment, resources and related systems;
Attend seminars and advanced technical training as needed and available;
Knowledge & Experience Required:
Educated to degree level in Engineering or Computer Science or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Experience delivering large complex technical programs.
Knowledge of business analysis techniques, tools and requirements gathering.
Knowledge of basic networking concepts and design practices.
Knowledge of various hosting environments and platforms.
Knowledge of basic integration techniques.
Good stakeholder management and influencing skills at project stakeholder level.
Ability to multi-task.
Excellent understanding of project management scheduling SW tools (Microsoft Project and/ or Primavera)
Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, & listening).
Excellent leadership qualities and the ability to make decisions without perfect information
Ability to positively influence others without direct authority in efforts to move assigned projects forward
Strong ability to resolve conflicts between members of project team or as needed throughout the organization
Excellent change management skills. Ability to accept change and respond to setbacks with minimal disruptions
Strong understanding of product development methodologies (Waterfall & Agile) and increment release planning
Thorough knowledge of PMI methodology and standards, and can adhere to company PM procedures and tools/templates/systems; Understands how to control projects via effective KPIs and risk management
Ability to work within a matrix organization and lead resources that may or may not be dedicated to the project(s)
Strong leadership qualities and the ability to make solid decisions confidently and without perfect information
Strong contract management skills and can manage scope and identify issues requiring documented contract change orders
Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
