DuPont Raw Materials and Coating Development Engineering Manager - Advanced Packaging Technologies in Marlborough, Massachusetts

The Raw Materials Development Engineering Leader resides in Semiconductor Technologies (ST) APT Development Engineering Science (DE). The Dupont Electronics & Imaging organization is comprised of premier researchers, application developers, and technical service experts located in state-of-the-art facilities around the world. The APT business offers cutting edge materials and formulations to the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology groups in the world. The Developmental Engineering function at DuPont is at the forefront of delivering innovative, market-driven solutions to some of the world’s toughest challenges. The incumbent will provide supervision and leadership to a group of research employees located in Marlborough, MA and closely interact with a team of researchers located in South Korea.

This group is responsible for the successful process R&D and scale-up of new APT specially-synthesized raw materials ranging from small organic molecules to complex polymers and commercially-sourced raw materials that are used in APT metallization and dielectric materials. This group is also responsible for developing and successful scaling-up dielectric roll-to-roll coatings. The incumbent will engage closely with global cross-functional teams to drive technical project delivery and be responsible for professional development of their team of direct reports. Due to the nature of this growing business there are significant developmental and growth opportunities for this role.

Key Role Activities

What does the role do? What business processes does it address?

  • Provide supervision and leadership to a group of Engineers and Skilled Technicians in the DE Raw Materials and Coating group. Manages day-to-day supervision of direct reports. Accountable for performance management, team building, reward and recognition, employee development and engagement.

  • Identify technical skill gaps and improve talent and skills capabilities within the group to allow the business to grow.

  • Drives growth and aligns cross functionally in supporting new product development in APT with focus on new raw materials used in new Metallization and Dielectric products and coating engineering for new Dielectric coating products

  • Serve as Key Technical and Resource Leader in rapidly responding to business-critical product performance issues. Ensures the right cross-section of individuals working as a team to solve customer issues as quickly and substantially as possible.

  • Builds engineering discipline and competencies with the APT DE Raw Material and Coatings function. Ensures the use of sound scientific methods including statistical analysis and experimental design methodologies.

  • Leverages own experience in relevant chemical fields to drive this knowledge throughout the work group. Manages DE Raw Materials and Coating group project portfolio in support of prioritized targets while also being responsible for related product scale-up activities partnered with the larger DE group, R&D, Quality, Manufacturing and Engineering.

  • Serves as project leader for major raw material or coating engineering efforts

  • Communicates and appropriately document work in the form of internal reports/presentations and external publications/presentations. Participate in identifying process trade secrets or patent filings to file. Author and contribute to trade secret documents and patent filings. Basic understanding of IP competitive landscape.

  • Serves as the Environmental, Health & Safety advocate for work group, ensuring understanding and adherence to policies and procedures. Leads team in promotion of best safety practices, habits, and behaviors.

  • Advocates for Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity and drives programs to support

  • Key member of the APT Technology Leadership Team

  • Serve as Key Technical and Resource Leader in rapidly responding to business-critical product performance issues related to raw materials or coating engineering. Ensures the right cross-section of individuals working as a team to solve customer issues as quickly and substantially as possible.

  • Provides input to key business team meetings such as Portfolio and Product Management Review to manage and drive a global and healthy project development portfolio spanning the spectrum from early developments to continuous improvement of existing products

ROLE (JOB) SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

Minimum requirements for the role (screen-out factors) including education and skills..

Required Qualifications

  • Technical M.S. or Ph.D. or equivalent in engineering, chemistry, material science, or related field

  • Minimum 5 years previous chemical process R&D, development engineering, and/or manufacturing experience. Total post-secondary education time plus experience should be minimum 9 years. Exceptional candidates with less experience will be considered.

  • Experience leading multiple complex projects and interdisciplinary teams

  • Track-record of fine chemicals scale-up or equivalent for commercial success

  • Recognized as a SME in key aspect(s) of engineering or chemical disciplines. Examples include raw material scale-up, small-to-large scale optimization of manufacturing processes, coating engineering. Experience with statistical analysis and experimental design.

  • Demonstrated technology leadership skill as evidenced by a successful track record of managing R&D or industrial-scale programs in areas relevant to fine chemicals or polymers.

  • Demonstrated track record of developing and mentoring employees

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work well with colleagues across geographic regions and business functions.

  • Demonstrated leadership and strong knowledge of laboratory safety practices. Comfortable working with hazardous chemicals in a laboratory environment.

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written English communication skills.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 10% of time (when travel is possible)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in chemical engineering, chemistry, or related discipline

  • Demonstrated track record as a people leader driving technology teams to successful delivery

  • Experience in scale-up and production of raw materials for semiconductor fabrication

  • Hands-on pilot-scale experience working with hazardous materials

  • Experience with technical customer engagement
