Sunovion Director, Medicinal Chemistry in Marlborough, Massachusetts

Sunovion Pharmaceuticals is looking for a Director, Medicinal Chemistry to join our Discovery Sciences Team in Marlborough, MA.

The Director of Medicinal Chemistry will lead or co-lead one or more research programs to advance them to the identification of novel, small molecule drug development candidates. Projects may include both Sunovion Discovery Sciences & DSP Drug Research Division team membership. Effectively manage contract research organizations (CROs) and research partners to ensure timely and effective completion of external projects. Identify and shepherd drug discovery research opportunities that are critical to the expansion of the discovery portfolio and to the realization of corporate strategies. Significantly impact company performance by growing internal and external chemistry capabilities and enhancing our flexible business model for drug discovery. Effectively utilize matrix management techniques to direct both internal and external resources. Interact with other functional areas including Pharmacology, Pre-clinical safety, CMC, IP legal, Translational Medicine, etc. to ensure portfolio project goals are delivered on time and consistent with the company's research and business objectives. Stimulate the spirit of collaboration between Sunovion Discovery Sciences and the DSP Drug Research Division in Osaka to ensure maximal productivity and minimize redundancies. Responsible for effective internal and external scientific communication (e.g. presentations, reports, research publications).

Essential Functions:

  • Apply medicinal chemistry principles and synthesis capabilities in drug discovery projects focused on CNS disorders.

  • Manage chemistry FTEs and other CRO projects effectively to ensure optimal productivity.

  • Lead or co-lead projects to develop hits to leads and ultimately into clinical candidates.

  • Facilitate expansion of the Discovery research portfolio into new CNS disease opportunities.

  • Develop strategies for expansion of the corporate privileged compound library and identify new opportunities with respect to research and technology.

  • Work as a drug discovery partner with Discovery Pharmacology to initiate and prosecute new research projects, with Legal to develop effective patent strategies, and with Translational Medicine & CMC to ensure efficient technology transfer for emerging drug candidates.

  • Represent the science of the company internally and externally.

  • Collaborate with DRD for synergy and maximal productivity.

Minimum Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • PhD in Organic Chemistry with > 10 years small molecule drug discovery experience; CNS research experience is a plus.

  • Skilled and comfortable with a fully outsourced research model.

  • Dynamic and creative individual with strong problem-solving and small molecule drug design abilities.

  • Excellent project leadership skills, work well in a team, be objective-driven, and understand the importance of project timelines.

  • Understanding of the biology of potential drug targets and systems biology.

  • Practical knowledge of the use of in vitro ADMET and in vivo PK to support lead generation and optimization.

  • Thorough understanding of process/strategy of intellectual property formation, in partnership with Legal, in the crafting of IP strategies and the use of IP to enhance the value of company programs.

  • State-of-the-art knowledge of technologies, processes and best practices and consistent contribution to organic chemistry/medicinal chemistry scientific and patent literature.

  • Keen awareness of the business of drug development and the ability to balance business and scientific goals in achieving success.

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
