The Enabling Technologies business of Medtronic brings our navigation, imaging, robotics, powered surgical, and advanced energy technologies together into one cross-functional, collaborative operating unit to employ the full breadth of our talent, technologies, products, services, and solutions to address the needs of customers and patients across the globe.

The candidate will be responsible for leading a functional team of Systems Engineers focused on our imaging technologies to achieve the technical objectives of the Enabling Technologies business. The functional leadership responsibilities will include oversight of the Systems Engineering team in their day to day activities, developing talent, ensuring robust design of new and fielded products, and driving functional excellence towards improving the effectiveness of the Systems Engineering organization.

Day in the life:

Functional Excellence:

  • Drive functional strategy to advance Systems Engineering through process, design practices, and organizational changes.

  • Lead, direct and review the work of individual contributors on the Systems Engineering team to ensure adherence to functional excellence expectations.

  • Identify, develop, and/or execute training to improve Systems Engineering, product technology, and surgical procedure subject matter expertise within Systems Engineering.

  • Ensure alignment between Systems Engineering and other product development functions.

  • Build positive partnerships with other Systems Engineering programs across Medtronic, business unit leaders, and functional leaders.

Talent Development:

  • Manage the team to achieve System Engineering and Enabling Technologies organizational goals.

  • Develop Systems Engineering talent to be effective leaders, including how to best approach technical problem solving, best utilize soft skills, how best to communicate to peers and leaders, etc.

  • Provide targeted opportunities to develop and stretch team members’ knowledge and capabilities.

  • Recruit individuals whose skills will enable Systems Engineering to achieve organizational objectives.

Program Execution:

  • Communicate across business units and with functional partners to evaluate, develop, and plan technical solutions.

  • Ensure programs have robust technical solutions and risk burndown plans.

  • Lead multiple Systems Engineering activities in the product development life cycle including solution identification, planning, monitoring and executing tasks for entire project.

  • Work with functional managers and individual contributors to overcome challenges/obstacles.

  • Support key efforts if major technical issues are identified.

Strategic Planning:

  • Work with the Research & Technology and Marketing teams to identify research and technology concepts that can help address solutions.

  • Work with research and business unit leaders to define a technology roadmap and product roadmap.

  • Partner in assessing viability and technical risks of specific technologies being considered.

  • Assess long-term opportunities with other companies or academic efforts.

Travel Requirements:

  • Travel < 20%.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in a technically related field required

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience

Nice to Have

Specialized knowledge to be successful in the role:

  • Experience in the medical device industry.

  • Multiple years’ experience as a Systems Engineer or core team leader.

  • Experience managing Systems Engineering teams that integrate software and hardware components in System or System of Systems design for complex systems.

  • Understand and apply emotional intelligence within themselves and their teams.

  • Strong mentorship and active listening capabilities.

  • A good leader that can positively drive change and deliver impactful results.

  • Experience in X-Ray based anatomical imaging, image processing, robotic systems, and/or motion control.

  • Experience in software, hardware, and system design – including development practices in those areas.

  • High skill in requirements development and safety risk management practices for medical device design.

  • Is a versatile, technically savvy, curious, broad systems thinker, and willing/able to work in a space with a lot of ambiguity.

  • Good judgment in assessing opportunities and risks of solutions.

  • Ability to assess new technologies via comprehensive reviews of the state-of-the-art.

  • Good at communicating complex technical opportunities, challenges, and other information to upper management in a concise but thorough fashion.

  • Demonstrates creativity while solving complex problems without known solutions.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

  • Solid engineering functional leadership skills and experience.
