MIT Lincoln Laboratory Wireless Communications Analyst in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Tactical Networks Group (65) specializes in advanced network and communications systems development, with a focus on rapid prototyping of radical next generation tactical mobile, military airborne communications systems.

Job Description:

The Tactical Networks Group is seeking to hire a wireless communications engineer that will design and analyze next generation communications algorithms for airborne and ground tactical radios. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of wireless communications theory and be able to enhance and/or formulate new decoding, modulation/demodulation, synchronization, and other algorithms to meet the needs of tactical systems. The candidate must be comfortable with performing link analysis such as anti-jam (AJ), low probability of detection/intercept (LPD/LPI), and other analysis. Preference will be given to candidates that have strong analytical and theoretical experience in designing and building wireless communications systems.

Required skills include:

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering with 3-5 years experience

  • Strong understanding of fundamentals of wireless digital communications systems and all PHY processes from “data in” to “baseband I/Q out” – Be able to clearly articulate the function of all digital blocks in a typical communications chain (encoders, modulators, correlators, etc.). Preference will be given to candidates who can describe processes analytically and describe the theory of operation for each block

  • Strong understanding of wireless communications theory (math behind all processing, BER curves, array processing, beamforming, linear algebra, etc.)

  • Strong Matlab analysis skills tailored to wireless digital communications

  • Experience designing digital processing blocks

Desired skills include:

  • Experience implementing signal processing on FPGA (and/or ASIC) – HDL design, meeting timing closure, simulation, tool chains

  • System-level understanding of radio design and development – be able to put together a detailed size, weight, power (SWAP) budget and make tradeoffs in link budget analysis

  • Familiarity with implementation issues around TRANSEC/COMSEC and DoD radio standards

  • Familiarity with RF/analog front-end designs, antennas, filters, mixers, ADC and DACs and the tradeoff between performing front end functions in analog or digital processing
