MIT Lincoln Laboratory Space Thermal Engineer in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Structural & Thermal-Fluids Engineering Group provides innovative multidisciplinary engineering solutions through the development of advanced mechanical and aerospace technologies for sea, ground, air, and space-based prototype systems for national security applications.

The Group supports a broad range of programs in our core areas of expertise as well as providing technical and program leadership. Examples of program impacts include:

  • Thermal management for high heat flux applications for systems operating on airborne platforms and in space

  • Development of structural-material systems for high precision space-based imaging and laser communication terminals

  • Aerodynamic designs for airborne sensors and unmanned aerial vehicles

  • Multi-disciplinary analysis of hypersonic vehicles

    Engineering solutions are developed through the utilization of appropriate technologies coupled with high-fidelity models and multi-disciplinary simulations, environmental and performance characterization testing, and the utilization and development of advanced materials to optimize solutions to meet ever increasing performance, size, weight, and environmental challenges.

    Position Description

    The Group is seeking thermal engineers with demonstrated expertise with space based systems. Specific desired experience includes:

  • Development of thermal control architectures and requirements for space hardware

  • Simulation of space-based payloads and satellites using modern numerical tools

  • Component and system level thermal vacuum testing

  • Use of novel thermal control hardware and approaches

    The successful candidate will be expected to perform as a lead thermal engineer on multi-year, space hardware and prototype development programs. Lead thermal engineer roles span the full program life cycle from concept development to on-orbit test. In addition to being part of an interdisciplinary engineering team, the candidate will be expected also lead and mentor other junior engineers. The position may require special security clearances and travel to meetings and field sites.

    Requirements

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

  • At least 5 years of direct relevant experience with space systems

  • Experience with modern numerical simulation tools

  • Testing experience

  • Proven ability to work as part of interdisciplinary teams

  • Ability to clearly communicate results in oral presentations and written reports
