MIT Lincoln Laboratory Optical Engineering-Associate Staff in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Optical Engineering Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory is a specialized group of about 35 Optical Engineers and Optical Specialists/Technicians. We collaborate with Mission Divisions across the Laboratory taking cutting-edge concepts and applying all aspects of the optical engineering discipline to the development of prototype satellite, airborne, and terrestrial optical systems. Our employees work within the entire optical system development life-cycle:

Position Description

As an Optical Engineer, you will conduct engineering research, design, analytical tasks, and optical system alignments & testing supporting a broad range of novel optical programs. You will develop and use skills in optical design, analysis, assembly, alignment, and testing. You will be responsible for operating highly technical experimental apparatus.

Requirements

  • A broad optical engineering education, with course work in geometrical and physical optics, with a familiarity of optical component fabrication, system alignment and testing.

  • A working knowledge of Zemax or Code V optical design software

  • You should demonstrate experience working in multi-disciplinary teams, excellent communication skills, and the ability to produce and present professional written and oral reports.

  • BS, or MS in Optical Engineering/Optical Sciences or equivalent

  • Entry Level BS graduates should have a GPA > 3.3

  • All employees at Lincoln Laboratory are required to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship

    Experience in one or more of the following areas is desired:

  • Familiarity with stray light modeling, FRED software

  • Experience assembling, aligning, and testing refractive and reflective optical components and systems

  • Experience designing and tolerancing optical systems for fabrication

  • Familiarity with COMSOL software
