MIT Lincoln Laboratory Machinist C in Lexington, Massachusetts
Group 72 – Fabrication Engineering
MIT Lincoln Laboratory pushes the boundaries of science and engineering to design, model, and fabricate technologies and prototype systems for national security applications. These mission areas include space imaging and data processing, high energy lasers, long range laser communications, ground-based radars, and undersea communication terminals. Within MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the Fabrication Engineering Group works with program teams from initial design through manufacturing, assembly, integration, and testing to fabricate low-volume advanced hardware. Our core PCB capabilities include automated solder paste printing, precision pick and place machines, and automated optical inspection systems. Our core mechanical competencies span precision fabrication, diamond turning, EDM machining, additive manufacturing, and 5-axis machining. Our core assembly, integration, and test capabilities include program integration spaces, cleanrooms, vibration testing, and space simulation chambers. The Group concentrates on high-complexity parts and state-of-practice prototyping capabilities, technical excellence, and quality systems for national security applications. State-of-practice prototyping capabilities are achieved through programs for employee’s technical and personal growth, continuous investigation and implementation of innovative fabrication technologies, and exceptional collaboration.
The position provides the candidate continuous opportunities to learn new skills to match the needs of the protype system, the interests of the candidate, and the Group’s objective to continuously implement innovative fabrication technologies.

Under supervision works from blueprints, specifications, detailed verbal instructions, or detailed sketches. Under supervision sets up and operates such machine tools. May work on routine tasks for periods without supervision. The candidate has a critical role in the fabrication process and ultimate delivery of the prototype systems. The candidate contributes to the fabrication of many of the prototype systems with specific job functions as:
Knowledge of basic machinist hand tools like micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators
A good understanding of conventional fabrication technologies and experience with the set-up and operation of computer numerical control (CNC) machines and lathes
A good working knowledge of conventional fabrication technologies and experience with machining
A good working knowledge of GD&T tolerancing and ANSI and ASME drafting standards
A good working knowledge of manufacturing and assembly techniques
A good working knowledge of CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) software and 3D & 2D CAD (Computer Aided Design) software
Familiarity with computers and an interest in exploiting the benefits of a model-based enterprise (MBE) that allows the transfer of digital information to more effectively fabricated hardware
Requirements
A minimum of two (2) years-applicable experience, or an associate’s degree from a technical college
Ability to work in a team environment
Recognized self-motivator that seeks to continuously learn and challenge themselves
Computer literacy, proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word
An excitement for fabricating complex parts that enable program teams to develop prototype systems that demonstrate technology of national importance
An excitement for fabricating complex parts that enable programs teams to develop prototype systems that demonstrate technology of national importance
A desire to develop advanced fabrication skills to support the fabrication of high-precision parts using equipment such as diamond turn (DT) machines and electronic discharge machining (EDM) machines, additive parts using equipment such as fused deposition machines (FDM) and selective laser melting machines (SLM), and complex parts using 5-axis machines and other advanced fabrication technologies
An interest in learning data management software such as PDM (Product Data Management) and/or PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) software
