Job Description

MIT Lincoln Laboratory is a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) chartered to develop advanced technology in support of national security. Research and development activities focus on long-term technology development as well as rapid system prototyping and demonstration. These efforts are aligned within key mission areas, including air and missile defense; space control; homeland protection and tactical systems; biological-chemical defense; communication and information technology; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems and technology; and advanced electronics technology. The Laboratory works with government and industry to transition new concepts, technology and prototypes into future system development and deployment.

Position Description

The Environmental Engineer will work as a key member of an Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) team, providing leadership and subject-matter expertise in environmental program implementation and compliance. Act as primary technical resource for environmental regulatory compliance. Provide leadership and guidance in interactions with environmental regulatory agencies. Access, research, interpret, and effectively communicate applicable environmental regulations and requirements. Assist the organization in determining potential environmental risks. Work with the EHS team and affected Lincoln Laboratory stakeholders to develop, review, and implement procedures, work processes and risk mitigation strategies to reduce environmental risk, emphasize pollution prevention, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. Assist with integration of environmental program requirements into overall EHS program to achieve risk reduction and compliance goals. Develop, prepare and/or review air, water and waste permit renewals, modifications, and updates for submittal to various regulatory agencies. Perform compliance audits and develop action plans and compliance solutions to close gaps identified in environmental programs. Prepare and deliver environmental training and other communications to members of the Laboratory community at all organizational levels. Develop and implement programs designed to increase employee awareness and knowledge of environmental compliance requirements. Assist with and provide oversight and coordination for hazardous chemical planning, hazardous waste management, contingency planning and emergency action planning. Participate in planning, design review, and commissioning of new/upgraded facilities/processes to ensure environmental compliance. Support continuous improvement by reviewing the environmental components of the EHS Management System and recommending necessary enhancements. Provide technical support & oversight for monitoring, data collection, and reporting programs to ensure regulatory reporting obligations are met. Provide technical support & oversight of wastewater and storm water regulatory requirements. Assist as a member of the EHS office with other duties as assigned, including preparing and delivering reports to management personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental or Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or related engineering or scientific discipline required.

  • Candidates must have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in progressively responsible and diverse positions in environmental engineering, compliance and regulatory audits

  • CHMM Certification or equivalent desired

  • Demonstrated expertise in understanding, interpreting and working within federal and state environmental regulations, with general background in occupational safety and health

  • Experience in semiconductor fabrication facilities, electronics manufacturing, chemical-intensive industry, and/or laboratory R&D or pilot plant experience is also desirable

  • Effective leadership and interpersonal skills required as well as effective oral and written communication skills are essential. Ability to interact with diverse organizational groups

  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Project)

  • A willingness to pursue additional professional certification(s) and/or professional development

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
