MIT Lincoln Laboratory Digital Hardware Engineer for Aerospace Systems in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Advanced Electro-Optical Systems Group specializes in the rapid design and prototyping of innovative electro-optic systems that address challenges facing the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, NASA, and other U.S. government entities. The group maintains broad expertise in satellite systems, electro-optical and infrared sensors, charge-coupled devices, electronics, image processing, and low–size/weight/power optical communications systems. The vertically-integrated group leverages this core expertise to architect, design, prototype, and deploy hardware and software systems in support of mission needs. Emphasis is on working closely with end users to develop enabling concepts, then building and fielding integrated systems on responsive timelines. The group seeks self-motivated engineers and scientists with multidisciplinary skill sets and a passion for prototyping systems that address critical national needs.

Job Description

The Advanced Electro-Optical Systems Group seeks a digital hardware engineer to join our vertically-integrated team. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate with optical, mechanical, and electrical engineers to design, prototype, and field high-impact highly-integrated elector-optic systems for use both terrestrially and in space. The candidate should be self-motivated, with a demonstrated capability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams and to autonomously identify and solve problems.

The successful applicant will initially take a lead role in the development of digital hardware for a space payload. The applicant will be working with a small tightly-integrated team, providing technical management for and contributing directly to the design and implementation of digital hardware solutions. The successful applicant will collaborate with engineers in other disciplines to optimize the design at the system level, requiring the applicant to have experience in other aerospace-related technical disciplines.

The collaborative nature of the role requires the successful applicant to work fully on site.

Required Skills

  • PhD in computer science or related field. A MS with 5 years of experience will also be considered

  • FPGA design expertise (VHDL, System Verilog)

  • Space systems expertise

  • Experience leading technical teams

You will stand out if you demonstrate expertise with the following

  • Experience in related technical field: mathematics, physics, optics, control systems, EO Sensors

  • Software (C/C++, python)
