Group Description

The Advanced Capabilities and Technologies group researches and develops high risk / high reward technology for advanced ground and satellite systems that are used for space domain awareness, space control, earth observation and scientific missions. Our work focuses on the development of novel concepts, instruments and algorithms. Projects range from laboratory-scale technology/concept development to delivery of large ground- and space-based prototypes that are transitioned into operational use. The group draws from expertise in a wide range of disciplines, including engineering, computer science, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and applied mathematics.

Job Description

Currently, the Advanced Capabilities & Technologies group is expanding its laboratory-based capabilities with an emphasis on developing new optical measurement architectures and techniques and is seeking an energetic engineer or physicist to join our team as an Associate Staff. This individual would support senior scientists in experimental design and setup, hardware/software integration, and laboratory measurements. They would be expected to participate in multiple aspects of technology development including laboratory testing, system integration, and field data collection.

Preferred Skills/Requirements

  • M.S. in Physics, Optical or Electrical Engineering, or other relevant technical field (B.S will also be considered with 3-5 years experience)

  • Demonstrated ability in electronics design & assembly

  • Strong experimentation skills, i.e. experimental system assembly, data acquisition systems, and scientific measurement techniques

  • Occasional travel to field sites to participate in measurements may be required

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with lasers, free-space and fiber-optic systems and components, CCD and advanced camera systems, and optical detection technology

  • Competency with C/C++, LabView, or other scientific programming languages

  • Experience with MetLab a plus
