POSITION SUMMARY: Incumbents in this position receive direct supervision from Bridge Inspection Engineers, Civil Engineers as well as other employees of higher grade who provide instructions, training and guidance on procedures, assign work, and review performance through verbal or written reports for effectiveness and compliance with established NBIS procedures and Department policies, procedures, rules and regulations. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Acts as a Bridge Inspection Team Member by assisting the Bridge Inspection Team Leader with bridge inspections. 2. Inspects bridges consistent with the requirements of NBIS and Department policies and procedures. 3. Conducts all fieldwork or inspections safely and in conformance with standards for traffic protection adopted by MassDOT. 4. Performs calculations related to estimating structural section loss and traffic counts by using calculators, computers, and other instruments. 5. Performs related duties such as collecting and compiling bridge data and reviewing plans and reports needed to prepare for a bridge inspection; operating inspection equipment and tools that are used as a normal part of bridge inspection. 6. Coordinates police details necessary to perform the work in a safe manner. Acts as a Resident Engineer for contracts as necessary to support inspection related activities. Minimum Entrance Requirements: This requisition will remain open until filled; however, first consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as bridge inspection, construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions I. An Associate’s degree with a major in civil engineeringor civil engineering technologymay be substituted for a maximum of one (1) year of the required experience. II. A Bachelor’s or higher degree with a major in civil engineeringor civil engineering technologymay be substituted for a maximum of two (2) years of the required experience. * The terms civil engineering and civil engineering technology include related engineering disciplines such as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, mining, airport, soils and materials. Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis for the proportion of the requirements actually completed. Special Requirements Must be able to successfully complete all federal and state training required to meet federal NBIS regulations and safety standards. Based on assignment, a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s license is required. Based on assignment, SCUBA certification from a recognized educational program may be required. *Executive Order #595: As a condition of employment, successful applicants will be required to have received COVID-19 vaccination or an approved exemption as of their start date.
