Summary This position is located in the Environmental Management Service (EMS) at the Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare System Northampton Campus. The incumbent of this position is a Laborer performing various duties such as being a part of the moving team, minor maintenance and repairs, debris removal, floor care and deep cleaning projects throughout the areas of the Northampton VA Medical Center. Responsibilities Some duties may include: Operate hand tools, power tools and material handling equipment (hand trucks, dollies, etc.) Assembles new furniture and disassembles furniture as requested by the supervisor. Work from ladders and must be physically able to move furniture. Ability to use computer to input reports, complete training, request leave and complete furniture/move requests. Serve as helper to stock room clerk for EMS. Perform minor PM on EMS equipment including but not limited to replacing bolts, belts and screws. Member of facility move team using the computer to access move requests. Install paper towel, toilet paper, soap dispenser and make repairs as needed using power tools Work Schedule: Monday - Friday Multiple tours available Position Description Title/PD#: Laborer/PD00477A Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be physically able to do a considerable amount of walking, standing, climbing ladders, stooping, bending and crawling. Incumbent must be able to work in congested areas in tight, cramped, or awkward positions. Incumbent may be required to carry and set up ladders. Incumbent may be required to lift or move heavy equipment or furniture that may weigh more than 100 pounds. Incumbent may be exposed to cleaning chemicals and be fit tested for proper PPE. Incumbent must be able to lift up to 100lbs. Working Conditions: Incumbent works in the Medical Center throughout the facility. Since much of the work is done in patient care areas, the incumbent must be ever alert to the safety and well-being of patients, visitors, staff and fellow employees. Duties may also involve working in tight, cramped, wet, dry and dusty areas. Incumbent may be exposed to skin irritations from strong chemical solutions. Incumbent may be subject to minor cuts, scrapes and bruises. Work is usually performed indoors or outdoors; worker may be exposed to drafts, noise, dust and dirt. Work may cause minor injuries on the including bruises, cuts and scrapes. The incumbent performs some work assignments outdoors, including during all types of weather and temperature extremes, day and night. The incumbent is subject to the possibility of bruises, cuts, and scrapes; and is subject to serious injury when using powered equipment. The incumbent follows basic and specific safety procedures and uses standard safety equipment, including steel-toe boots, gloves, and ear and eye protections in the completion of assignments. The incumbent is considered an emergency-essential employee and is subject to emergency recall outside of normal duty-hours to assist with cleanup due to weather related events and other natural or man-made disasters.
