Sanofi Group Senior Scientist, Purification Development in Framingham, Massachusetts

Position Overview:

Purification Process Development (PPD) is an R&D department within the Sanofi Global CMC Development organization. PPD is responsible for development, scale-up, transfer and characterization of downstream processes for early and late stage clinical and commercial manufacturing of therapeutic proteins, hormones and antibodies. In addition, the department develops next-generation commercial processes, develops and implements new technologies, and supports and updates our global purification platform. The department also has particular expertise in the area of integrated and continuous bioprocessing and is actively working toward the advancement of this field.

Key Responsibilities:

We are looking for candidates for the position of Senior Scientist. This individual should be able to independently plan and lead complex projects or studies, serve in cross-functional or cross-site roles and contribute to PPD strategy and culture, while ensuring the highest standards of safety, environmental and regulatory compliance are maintained in the workplace. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading teams of purification scientists to develop purification processes for clinical and/or commercial manufacturing.

  • Developing and managing plans to achieve objectives, planning and prioritizing resource requirements and allocations within a functional team or for a cross-functional project.

  • Applying technical and platform knowledge to design studies, assist in project design and independently complete work while representing PPD in transversal projects or cross-site initiatives.

  • Potentially managing junior team members and providing technical guidance and support.

  • Staying informed of relevant new technologies and initiating the development of impactful and appropriate new technologies.

  • Applying scientific expertise and technical knowledge to initiate, design, direct and execute experiments and/or studies in support of CMC project goals and technology development goals.

  • Analyzing, interpreting and presenting results internally for governance and technical meetings.

  • Serving as a subject-matter expert in areas such as purification process development, high throughput techniques, and/or continuous manufacturing.

  • Demonstrating continuous growth in depth and breadth of technical expertise and understanding of strategic goals of the group and team.

  • Establishing good communications and collaborative relationships with cross-functional colleagues.

  • Contributing to the scientific literature and conferences, gaining recognition as a subject-matter expert in both internal and external purification communities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology or related discipline with a minimum of 4 years of relevant industry experience or a Master’s degree with a minimum of 8 years or a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience.

  • Knowledge and understanding of production and purification of biologic therapeutics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with process modeling, process controls, and mathematical and statistical approaches.

  • Has advanced knowledge of the principles, concepts and practices of various aspects of a purification process development and basic knowledge of principles and concepts in other relevant disciplines.

  • Experience in process transfer and scale-up to clinical and/or commercial sites.

  • Demonstrated ability to function in a matrix and collaborative/team oriented environment.

  • Demonstrated passion for scientific innovation through patents, publications and presentations.
