Staples Manager of Engineering - eCommerce in Framingham, Massachusetts

Description Position Summary:

As an Engineering Manager eComm, you will lead eCommerce initiatives for (B2C) and (B2B) web properties, delivering high quality, scalable, secure and stable technical solutions and manage a team of Engineers. You should be able innovate, create a next generation technical platform, research new trends in the industry and continue to modernize, while maintaining the current platform. You will be ultimately responsible for development, integration, strategy, planning, optimization, uptime, migrations, deployments, and maintenance of these mission critical applications.


  • Collaboratively work to define project scope, goals and deliverables that support business objectives in partnership with senior leadership and stakeholders.

  • Establish Reference architectures, Integration patterns, Tech Specs, Best Practices, Design patterns and review business processes, requirements and provide recommendations on technical design specifications.

  • Create highly complex programs for and eCommerce platform where performance, efficiency, security and reliability are critical.

  • Develop and document current and target state architecture diagrams and mappings.

  • Develop application portfolio and technology strategies, standards and roadmaps.

  • Maintain strong architectural and domain expertise on and; knowledge of current and emerging technologies and products, evaluating for both general and specific usage.

  • Establish solutions strategy to drive business results. Advise the business partner leadership teams on the best use of technology to achieve their goals.

  • Define project success criteria and disseminate them to involved parties throughout project life cycle. Effectively communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders in a timely and clear fashion. Proactively manage changes in project scope, identify potential crises, and devise contingency plans.

  • Effectively lead teams and inspire others to achieve goals through innovation, quality and excellence.

  • Guide the Engineers through the development, testing and implementation stages and review the completed work effectively. Provide direction and technical expertise in design, development and systems integration. Provide technical training to teams when required and serve as a technical mentor to team members

  • Recruit and hire new associates. Provide supervision for direct reports including hired services contractors and interns.

Qualifications Basic:

  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Math or related field.

  • 8-10 years of total experience.

  • Minimum 2 year of experience managing software engineers.

  • Strong User Interface / User Experience (UI/UX) development skills in: HTML5/XHTML, CSS3, JavaScript, JSP, XML, XSLT, DHTML, and AJAX.

  • Solid understanding of developing applications in JAVA/J2EE, Spring Framework, REST webservices

  • Experience in both relational and NoSQL database – Oracle, Mongo, Couchbase

  • Experience is micro-services architecture and development using frameworks like SpringBoot.

  • Experience in ReactJS.

  • Experience developing and managing applications that run on cloud servers.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of caching technologies, including Akamai.

  • Rich Internet applications (RIA), including jQuery, HTML5, and JavaScript.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of cross-browser/cross-platform compatibility.

  • Knowledge of Netflix Open Source Suite (OSS) frameworks like Zuul, Eureka, Hysterix and RxJava.

  • Performance optimization best practices and performance tuning following industry techniques.

  • Design Patterns and unified modeling language (UML).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry standards (W3C, Web Services, and J2EE).

  • Encourages innovation and motivates/coaches the team.

  • Strong ability to collaborate with cross functional teams including: architects, engineers, quality engineering and operations teams to build solutions
