OPPORTUNITY FOR MASSPORT EMPLOYEES ONLY.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) is currently accepting bids for the position of HVAC Mechanic (Bargaining Unit, Local Union No. 537) in the Aviation department. The HVAC Mechanic performs general HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) maintenance and repair duties in all Massport structures at Logan International Airport.

Essential Tasks of the Job

Performs maintenance and repairs on Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and refrigeration systems as directed.

  1. Responds to service calls for maintenance and repairs, walks or drives to site.

  2. Contacts appropriate party and/or performs corrective action to repair, replace or balance, fans, blowers, motors, filters, belts, AC vents, ducts, pumps, heat exchangers, steam, chilled water, hot water, and other fluid, and air systems.

  3. Monitors and calibrates air-handling system; makes adjustments as needed.

  4. Troubleshoots HVAC systems utilizing computer-based service tools.

  5. Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, or replaces HVAC/R equipment which may or may not contain refrigerants, such as, but not limited to: package rooftop equipment, split system air conditioners, package air conditioners, self-contained air-conditioning, refrigerated air driers, heating equipment, etc.

Performs preventive maintenance on HVAC systems as needed.

  1. Chemically cleans all air-handling coils and reheat coils.

  2. Replaces filters, motors, fans, belts, coils, and controls etc. on systems as required.

  3. Repairs, replaces and/or adjust vents and duct work; duct and pipe insulation.

  4. Assesses extent of repairs necessary, trouble shoots and contacts supervisor regarding need for outside contractors.

  5. Keeps logs on all equipment.

  6. Performs weekly inspection of all operating systems.

Responds to emergency situations according to airport procedures and airport emergency codes; acts as member of first response team as directed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

SECONDARY JOB TASKS:

Performs general maintenance and replaces HVAC carbon and particulate filters as needed.

Inspects terminals while performing daily repairs and reports other facility damage and maintenance needs.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

Education: Ability to read; demonstrate basic oral, written, mathematical and manual skills; and operate machinery.

Experience: 3 - 5 years’ experience in commercial air conditioning, refrigeration, and HVAC Systems maintenance and service required.

Unique Expertise/Certification/Registrations:

  1. Current and valid driver’s license required.

  2. Massachusetts Refrigeration Technicians License required.

  3. EPA #608 Refrigerant Certification required.

  4. Extensive knowledge of building heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems and associated equipment and controls required.

  5. Working knowledge of LP steam piping and radiation/reheat converters preferred.

  6. Working knowledge of control circuitry including low voltage, electro-pneumatic and electronic systems required.

  7. Knowledge of computer based remote monitoring and control of HVAC and

    mechanical systems preferred.

  8. Ability to troubleshoot electro-pneumatic systems preferred.

  9. Ability to pass airfield driving test and obtain Aerodrome Ramp and Apron License required.

  10. Ability to attain Massport security clearance required.

  11. Ability to pass a Massport drug test and background check required.

Working Conditions:

Environmental Parameters: Ability to work in an airport environment with conditions which may include fumes, odors, gases, chemicals, and dust as well as decibels in the range of 65 100; in all weather conditions (hot, cold, humid, dry, and wet); at heights on top of buildings; and in conditions and situations in which there is danger to life, health, or bodily injury, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to all types of explosives, and exposure to toxic chemicals and biological agents. Ability to work in all MPA vehicles and airport-related structures.

Physical Demands:

Strength: Ability to lift/move items weighing up to 70 lbs.

Type: Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Ability to stoop, crawl and work in confined spaces. Clarity of vision beyond 20 feet to see distances being traveled by equipment being operated and approaching aircraft, clarity of vision at 20 inches or less to view blueprints. Good hearing to monitor radios and interact with the public. Ability to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolding and stairs. Ability distinguish signal, runway lights and color-coded wires.

Supplemental Information

Work Schedule: Must have the ability to work any shift as assigned, including weekends, for a 40-hour workweek. Available for overtime as assigned.

Equipment Used: Computers, 2-way radio, telephone, volt meter, amp meter, airflow meters, water flow meters, power tools, leak detectors, tube benders, coil cleaning agents, soldering/brazing equipment, hand tools, and other MPA equipment.
