We have an exciting leadership opportunity at our facility in Devens, MA. The Separations Scientist requires an expert level understanding of science and technology applied to the physical separation of components mainly by chromatographic techniques to support chemical process development and GMP manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). The position is responsible to lead the use of chemical development activities for the generic API portfolio and originator projects.
Designs and implements separation procedures to enable the isolation and purification of intermediates, impurities, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API)
Integrates state-of-art separation techniques and technologies into synthetic development plans
Accountable for defining and implementing internal separation science activities
Develops integrated separation science activities by collaboration with Analytical Development, Solid Form Sciences, and the wider JM corporate resources
Creates detailed workplans for projects
Responsible for leading internal and external technology transfer of separation processes into the manufacturing function
Authors development reports to be used as source documents for regulatory filings
Drives continuous improvement to enable improved process understanding to ensure ‘right first time’ operation of separation processes
Represents the Chemical Development function in internal and external technical meetings
To carry out/ take on any other duties which are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.
Are you the ideal candidate?
PhD in a chemical, physical or biotechnology discipline, with >5 years of separation science in the pharmaceutical or separation science industry.
Expertise in developing and optimizing separation processes to enable safe, rapid, and cost-effective isolation of key materials.
Experience with small-scale and large-scale separations using MPLC, HPLC, normal, and reverse phase systems.
Expert knowledge of appropriate analytical techniques for separation technologies.
Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to write clear and concise technical reports, presentations and supporting documentation.
Ability to lead through influence with internal and external scientific teams and all levels of management.
Ability to develop detailed workplans aligned with business objectives followed by successful execution.
Ability to define problems, collect relevant data, recognize patterns, and draw conclusions from disparate information streams.
Expertise in the use of scientific databases and the chemical literature.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of tools.
Experience using simulated moving bed (SMB) and vari-column separations for binary mixtures
Expertise in the use of statistical methods such as design of experiments (DoE)
Knowledge and experience of applying technologies such as PAT, QbD to separations
Experience working in a cGMP production environment
