State of Massachusetts Wildlife Technician - Long-Term Seasonal in Dalton, Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game works to preserve the state's natural resources and people's right to conservation of those resources, as protected by Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution. To carry out this mission, the Department exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife species, plants, and natural communities, as well as the habitats that support them.

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (DFW) is responsible for the conservation - including restoration, protection and management - of fish and wildlife resources for the benefit and enjoyment of the public.

The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Fisheries and Wildlife is accepting applications and resumes for the position of Wildlife Technician - Long-Term Seasonal.

Long-Term Seasonal Wildlife Technician I - Performs a variety of manual tasks as assigned in connection with the management of fisheries and wildlife resources and facility maintenance. Job is a full time, long-term seasonal position reporting daily to the Western District Office in Dalton. Scheduled hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 PM. Work hours may be shifted occasionally to accommodate certain projects. Work will be primarily in the field, in all weather conditions and requires physical stamina, manual dexterity, ability to walk over uneven terrain while carry field equipment, and possibly wildlife.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Detailed Statement of Duties:

  1. Distribution of fish and pheasants.

  2. Assists with fisheries management projects using electrofishing equipment, nets, and other sampling equipment.

  3. Assists with fieldwork and data entry related to wildlife research and management projects.

  4. Collects biological field samples as instructed including deer browse, deer pellet counts, and rabbit pellet counts.

  5. Assists with wildlife management projects, performing such tasks as trapping, bird banding, nest box cleaning, etc.

  6. Required to work outdoors often in adverse weather conditions including rain, snow, cold and heat.

  7. Handles nuisance animal complaints.

  8. Performs carpentry, masonry, and other techniques involved in the maintenance and repair of buildings, vehicles, equipment and grounds.

  9. Uses, maintains, and repairs many kinds of hand, power, and shop tools and equipment; including chain saws, vehicles, motors, pumps, etc.

  10. Provides information to the public on fisheries and wildlife activities.

  11. Performs routine custodial functions at assigned facilities.

  12. Uses land management equipment, including weed whackers, brush saws, and mowers to maintain access sites throughout the District.

  13. Checks harvested game and handles dead animals.

  14. Assists in marking property boundaries.

  15. Assists in general land stewardship including trash pickup, vegetation removal, and conservation easement monitoring.

  16. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required at Hire (List Knowledge, skills, and abilities)

  1. Skill in using hand and power tools.

  2. Skill in using motorized tools.

  3. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  4. Ability to work in team setting.

  5. Ability to routinely lift greater than 50lbs throughout the work day.

  6. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and have a clean driving record.

  7. Ability to read and write using the english language.

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience in work associated with fish or game management, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in fisheries or wildlife technology, fisheries or wildlife management, marine science or fisheries, marine or wildlife biology or a related field may be substituted for the required experience.
