Your Impact

WSP is seeking an Ecological and Human Health Risk Assessor with three to five years of experience for our Chelmsford, Massachusetts office.

We are seeking a motivated candidate who is willing to learn to join our current team of risk assessment professionals in executing risk assessments as well as project planning and closure. Risk assessments will be prepared to meet the requirements of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, and many other states’ environmental regulatory programs.

The ideal candidate would be located in the Chelmsford area primarily working with our senior ecological risk assessor while being part of the human health risk assessment team and also being part of projects across the company. You will have the opportunity to learn both ecological and human health risk assessment while focusing primarily on ecological risk assessment. WSP offers the opportunity and flexibility to balance work in the office and from home with a three day ‘in person’ policy.

Key Responsibilities

This position will involve the implementation of project work associated with multimedia (air, water, soil, sediment, and biota) risk assessments. The selected candidate will contribute to the preparation of risk assessment reports as a member of project-specific risk assessment teams. This position offers the opportunity to learn from and grow with an established risk practice and to address complex environmental challenges by executing the following roles/responsibilities:

  • Extensively use Microsoft Excel to analyze chemical data and calculate ecological and human exposure risk.

  • Learn and use standard risk assessment spreadsheet tools.

  • Learn and understand regulatory and technical requirements for conducting risk assessments under specific regulatory programs.

  • Document in written text risk assessment activities that have been completed, including data evaluation. selection of chemicals of potential ecological concern, exposure assessment, toxicity assessment, and calculations of cancer risk and noncancer hazard.

  • Conduct quality assurance/quality control activities for work products prepared by colleagues.

  • Conduct work activities within identified budget and schedule requirements.

  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals to win new work for small and large projects that include a risk assessment component.

  • May contribute to technical presentations or papers for publication.

Who You Are

Qualifications and Experience:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, or related scientific discipline

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in risk assessment

  • Knowledge of risk assessment principles, procedures, and guidance particularly USEPA CERCLA and Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP)

  • Strong technical writing skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, listen and engage, including communicating technical information effectively

  • Familiarity using Microsoft Excel for the presentation of data, calculations, and data evaluation

  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Knowledge of the principles and standards of scientific study

  • Ability to work effectively with team members as well as independently

  • Must be well organized, able to manage and prioritize several assignments at one time, and deliver on time and within budget

  • Able to work in the field to collect samples

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience with risk assessment-specific tasks (presentation of analytical data and dose-response data, selection of chemicals of potential concern, calculation of exposure point concentrations (Excel and ProUCL), and calculation of cancer risk and Hazard Index) is desirable

  • Experience with metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances is desirable
