Position Summary:Incumbents of positions in this series install heating, ventilating, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment including related fixtures; check equipment for malfunctioning; maintain and repair equipment; and perform related

work as required.The purpose of this work is to install and maintain heating, ventilating, air-conditioning and refrigerationequipment.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Receives specific assignments and obtains materials and special tools from stock as required.

  • Uses all standard and special tools required of primary craft and all standard tools required of other crafts as necessary.

  • When performing work at the HVAC journeyman level the incumbent:

  • Reads and interprets written instruction, diagrams and maintenance manuals

  1. Investigates building equipment or structures as it relates to HVAC to identify causes of breakdown or malfunction and repair.

  2. Plans and organizes work to be performed and verifies that all necessary materials and parts are available.

  3. Constructs, assembles, repairs HVAC systems.

  4. Instructs and directs less skilled workers who have been assigned to assist in major projects.

  5. Reports breakdowns, deterioration or malfunction of building equipment and HVAC systems to Supervisor as noted during inspections and may recommend remedial action and/or the use of new materials and equipment.

  • Performs diversified building and grounds maintenance work at MassDOT Facilities below the journeyman level when not engaged in work of primary craft.

  • Prepares reports on materials used and time spent on various maintenance projects as requested.

  • Operates snow removal equipment such as snow blowers and shovels; operates snow plowing and sanding equipment if qualified and licensed

  • Must be able to climb ladders and use lifts over 10 feet.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Performs other duties similar in nature and skill level to the above duties.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE :

Knowledge of the standard preventive maintenance procedures followed in connection with heating, refrigeration,ventilation, air-conditioning and related electrical systems.

  1. Knowledge of the methods followed in the lubrication of machinery and equipment.

  2. Knowledge of the methods used in the care and maintenance of small hand or power tools.

  3. Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools such as pliers and screwdrivers.

  4. Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures followed in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating,refrigeration, ventilating, air-conditioning and electrical systems.

  5. Knowledge of the terminology, coding, symbols and standard abbreviations used in the installation, maintenanceand repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating, air-conditioning and related electrical systems.

  6. Knowledge of the methods and techniques followed in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating,refrigeration, ventilating, air-conditioning and related electrical systems.

  7. Knowledge of the types and uses of material and equipment used in heating, refrigeration, ventilating, air-conditioning and related electrical systems.

  8. Knowledge of the methods and techniques of pipe threading.

  9. Skill in using small hand tools such as hammers and screwdrivers.

  10. Skill in using small hand-held power tools such as saws, drills and power hammers.

  11. Skill in using equipment used in heating, refrigeration, ventilating, air-conditioning and related electrical systems.

  12. Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules and regulations regarding assigned unit activities.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part- time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Special Requirements:

Applicant must possess a universal certification under federal requirements 608-air conditioning technician certifications.

Applicant must possess a current and valid refrigeration technician's license by the state of Massachusetts.

Applicant must have a valid Class D vehicle operator's license.
