State of Massachusetts 3rd Class Power Plant Engineer - CoGen in Canton, Massachusetts
The Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children operated by the Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking a 3rd Class Power Plant Engineer - CoGen to join its facilities team. This position operates, maintains, and/or repairs high pressure boilers and auxiliary machinery and equipment; cleans machinery and equipment; responds to emergencies or equipment breakdowns; maintains adequate supply of fuel; and performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor. Please note: This is a 40 hour a week position, working Monday-Friday 6:00 AM- 2:30pm _Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_ · Checks, inspects andmonitors various types ofmachinery, equipment andsystemssuch assteam traps,heat control panels,safety valves andgauges, high andlowwaterconverters and/or steam reducing stations, gas systems,firealarms, firesprinklers andfirehydrant systems, standpipes, hot waterpreheatoroiljackets; various types of generators such asdiesel, steamand turbine;varioustypes of pumps andwater pumping stations; pneumatic temperature andpressure control systems; electrical systems; steam andwaterlines and systems; refrigeration systems;airconditioning and ventilating systems; andmotor bearings, boiler fires, aircompressors, smoke stack emissions, coiling oiltanksandchemical tank levels,etc.,toensure thatassigned plantfacilityis operated In asafe, efficientandpollution freemanner. * Ensures that the co-generation plant is operated within environmental compliance by ensuring plant is being operated in accordance with orders issues by state agencies including the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Public Safety and the Bureau of Professional Licensures. * * · Operatesmachineryandequipmentsuchaschillers,boilers,generators,pumps,andvalvestoensuretheprovisionofpower. * * · Repairs andmaintains machinery and equipment by replacing turbines, boilers, burners, motors, pumps and compressors; by using metallaths, electric hacksaws, pipe threaders and othermachine shop equipment; by turning over auxiliary equipment asneeded;byrepairing andoverhauling pipes,valves,gauges, etc.;bycleaning orreplacing filters; by lubricating equipment; and bymaking minor electricalorplumbing repairs to keep equipment operating efficiently and to prevent breakdowns. * * · Cleans andmaintains work areasandplantmachineryandequipment, suchassuctionanddischarge oil strainers, burners,boilers, and pumps to ensure thesafety and efficiency of plant operations. * * · Responds to emergencies and breakdowns by evaluating equipment orsystem problems; byidentifyingproblems with systems covered under service contractandinformingtheappropriate contractor; by determining that repairsarenecessary andtaking corrective action; bydeciding when toshutdown equipment or systems; by transferring from automatic tomanual operation; andby operating the power plantby total steam when other systems failto ensure uninterruptedservice. * * · Oversees the acquisition,storage ariduse offueloilsby verifying receipt of fuel and directingdelivery toproper storage facility; monitoring fueloillevels by means ofadipstick and treatingfueloil with additives toremove sludge andprevent corrosion toensurethe availability of clean burning fuel oil. * * · Performs relatedfunctions such asinspecting operating systems onaregular basis and identifying andreporting faulty equipment; calibrating pneumatic temperature andpressure control systems; making entries in logs or other records of fuel consumption,temperatures,etc.;reviewing blueprints, technical manuals orother specialized material; adjusting heatlevels according tooutside temperatures; identifying work-related problems notedbypersonnel;respondingtocomplaints; interpreting lawsandcodes andassessing their applicability toplant operations; attending training programs; andsettingwork orrepair priorities. _Required Qualifications_: * Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, blueprints, drawings, technical manuals, etc. * Knowledge of the principles of operation of industrial type heating systems. _Preferred Qualifications:_ * Knowledge of the types and uses of industrial type heating systems. * Knowledge of the principles of pneumatics as applied to heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems. * Knowledge of calibration and/or adjustment techniques as applied to pneumatic control systems. * Knowledge of the types and uses of precision measuring equipment used in a power plant such as manometers, voltmeters, anemometers, tachometers, etc. * Knowledge of the principles of operation of internal combustion engines. * Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures followed in power plants. * Knowledge of the proper methods for storing and handling fuels. * Ability to adjust to changing situations to meet emergency or changing program or production requirements. _Working conditions:_ * Ability to lift heavy objects, with or without an accommodation. /_Agency Mission:_/ Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children (PRHC) located in Canton, MA is a Joint Commission Accredited, 90 bed pediatric hospital predominately serving children and young adults (ages 7–22) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
