IBM Strategy and Business Development Leader - Intellectual Property in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Your Role and Responsibilities

IBM Intellectual Property team is looking for a Strategy strategic thinker with business development know-how who may identify and shape intellectual property licensing opportunities. Primary responsibility will be identification and support for our IBM Cloud, IBM Hybrid Cloud, and IBM Systems technologies and solutions. The business development executive will be responsible for (i) outlining the business outlook for potential opportunities -- including assessing the market outlook and defining specific market plays (ii) establishing client contacts (leveraging the broader IBM), (iii) evaluating financial deal proposals, (iv) participating in deal negotiations and (v) leading deal approval process.

Achievement of goals requires working closely with the IBM Cloud and IBM Systems teams to understand the various technologies, potential client's business objectives, and structuring alternatives to maximize value for both the client and IBM. This role supports IBM's intellectual property income goals and will have a direct impact on IBM's bottom line.

Responsibilities include:

  • Identify new opportunities by analyzing industry strategies, technology shifts, and business changes

  • Outline business prospects for new opportunities by assessing the market, identifying specific market plays, and defining commercialization models

  • Structure licensing offerings from IBM's intellectual property optimizing financial benefits and meeting business objectives

  • Establish relationships and engage with target clients to support opportunity pipeline and ongoing relationships

  • Close intellectual property deals and realize intellectual property income goals; drive deals to close by engaging required internal and external teams thru deal completion

  • Offer subject matter expertise and deepening understanding for IBM Cloud, IBM Hybrid Cloud, and IBM Systems to support licensing offering development and alignment with IBM business objectives

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 3-10+ plus years strategy and business development experience

  • 3-10+ years technology industry experience with a strong preference for Cloud, Systems, and Storage software

  • Project management experience, ability to multi-task, and flexibility with varying priorities based on the needs of the business

  • Growth mindset with a passion for cultivating new business

  • Bachelor's degree with preference for engineering and / or software

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Direct client engagement experience with CxO audiences and executive communication skills

  • Deal negotiation and complex contract negotiation experience

  • Master's degree or doctorate preferred
