Biogen Senior Director, Bioassays and High-Throughput Screens in Cambridge, Massachusetts

About This Role Biogen is looking for an innovative scientific thought leader to run our Bioassays and High-Throughput Screens (BHTS) group. As the head of BHTS, you will lead a group that provides expertise in the design, development, and execution of physiologically relevant biochemical and cell-based assays and high-throughput screens to enable identification and optimization of lead molecules and the characterization of their molecular mechanisms of action. You will report to the head of Biotherapeutics and Medicinal Sciences (BTMS). What You’ll Do * Define a vision for the unit and proactively identify new directions to keep the group at the cutting edge of assay science and high-throughput screening while maintaining a rigorous focus on quality. * Provide in-depth knowledge and scientific leadership of cell-based and biochemical assay technologies and associated data analysis, including label-free methods, primary cell systems, and phenotypic screens. * Partner closely with project teams to deliver a portfolio of programs across relevant modalities (e.g., small molecules, biologics) and stage gates (idea to candidate nomination). * Be accountable for the quality, reliability, and timeliness of assay data uploaded to the corporate database. * Build a wide network of relevant relationships in academe and industry and encourage the external presentation and publication of BHTS work. * Maintain a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment that fosters diverse views and ideas and enables hiring, growing, developing, and retaining talent. * Manage effective allocation of budget and group of 15 internal FTEs to advance drug candidates in alignment with project portfolio priorities. Who you are You are a strategic visionary and a scientific innovator who can set a direction for the group and establish productive working relationships with project teams and partner groups such as medicinal chemistry, protein engineering, gene therapy, physical biochemistry, DMPK, chemical biology and proteomics, and discovery biology. You are an influencer to peers and leadership as a member of the BTMS Leadership Team, the Small-Molecule Speed Committee (SMSC), and portfolio governance bodies such as the Discovery Portfolio Alignment Committee (DPAC). #LI-JR1 Required Education * Ph.D. or equivalent in a field highly relevant to assay sciences and graduate and/or post-doctoral work that required bioassay expertise. Required Skills * Ten or more years of experience in assay development and high-throughput screening in the pharmaceutical industry. * Expert in the design, development, and execution of bioassays to quantitate the potency in vitro of small- and large-molecule drug candidates in the neuroscience portfolio. * Previous experience as a leader of a group of high-performing cross-disciplinary 10+ scientists, including direct reports.
