RESEARCH SPECIALIST, Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies (ISN), to provide training and support for a variety of nano-visualization instruments including scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and other scientific research equipment. Will support the ISN’s large cross-disciplinary research facility that includes several laboratory areas housing diverse experimental capabilities and serves regular and occasional users from across MIT. Will provide one-on-one and group training on equipment to students, postdocs, and visiting scientists; maintain/troubleshoot equipment by performing small repairs, cleanings, routine calibrations, etc., and work with vendors to schedule more complex repairs/maintenance; and provide general lab operations support (e.g., helping maintain vacuum pumps, assisting researchers with experimental and equipment operating procedures and with facilities access processes). Other equipment responsibilities will be defined when extending an employment offer and evolve based on ISN equipment priorities and the candidate’s interest in expanding her/his own equipment expertise.
REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree in the physical sciences/engineering; three years’ hands-on experience operating electron microscopy (SEM) and other high-level nano-visualization equipment; and ability and desire to learn how to operate and maintain scientific research equipment and obtain the proficiency needed to train others in its basic operation. Seek a hands-on, people-oriented, team player who is comfortable working with and training a wide range of people with various experience levels, including faculty, students, postdocs, other research staff, and visiting researchers from the U.S. government and industry. A strong background in characterization of nano-structural features in diverse materials including soft materials such as polymers and (nano)composites preferred; as is familiarity with non nano-visualization scientific research instrumentation (e.g., equipment for optical, mechanical, and thermal characterization; materials processing; and wet and dry lab operations).
