As part of the Discovery Technology and Molecular Pharmacology (DTMP) group in the Discovery Sciences organization within Janssen Parma R&D, you will lead, develop and implement state of the art approaches to identify and validate new targets for intervention for all six Janssen Therapeutic Areas, Oncology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases. You will work in an exciting, interdisciplinary environment, overlapping the different stages of the discovery pipeline, by interacting with multiple internal and external organizations.

The candidate will have a strong background in design and execution of cellular experiments and screens using RNAi, CRISPR, and other functional genomics tools for target identification, MOA characterization, and mechanisms of resistance and/or sensitivity to small and large molecules. They will also have experience with complex cellular model systems like primary cell culture and stem cell-derived systems (induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and 3D spheroid/organoid). Having an aim to innovate to integrate CRISPR technologies with high throughput proteomics, transcriptomics, single cell applications to drive added value for drug development programs is a high priority.

The successful candidate will take ownership for personnel management, including but not limited to performance appraisals and talent development plans. They will help recruit and retain highly qualified staff, develop capabilities of staff, and ensure that staff is competent, trained, and qualified for assigned work and ensure that staff is optimally utilized, rewarded, and motivated. They will effectively communicate data and results to our stakeholders within and outside of J&J and work effectively with colleagues in across J&J sectors. They will be responsible achieving pipeline objectives and assigns appropriate resources within timeline and budgetary constraints.


  • A Ph.D. is required or equivalent advanced degree, in biological, pharmacological, or chemical sciences.

  • A minimum of 4 or more years of post-degree experience in a biotech/ pharmaceutical setting, or 6 or more years in a high-quality academic environment with a strong background with industry alliances is required

  • Experience in designing and implementation of functional genomic strategies for target identification, MOA characterization, and mechanisms of resistance and/or sensitivity is required.

  • A strong record of strategic foresight and implementation of cutting-edge genetics or functional genomics and project leadership of novel clinical candidates within the drug development paradigm is preferred.

  • Strong experience to recruit, mentor and develop both Ph.D. and non-Ph.D. scientists are required.

  • Outstanding communication, organizational and leadership skills, with a successful track record of collaborating with cross-functional scientific teams is required.

  • Experience leading external collaborations in industry or academia is required.

  • Excellent written and oral presentation capabilities is required.

  • Outstanding record of external publications and presentations at major conferences is required.
