About the Role:

Reporting to the VP of Advanced Biomaterials and Process Development, you will be a key member of ConvaTec’s newly-founded materials center of excellence based in the new ConvaTec Technology Center in the greater Boston. You will be a primary subject-matter expert and technical leader within ConvaTec’s global Technology and Innovation group.

You will engage globally with ConvaTec’s four major business units, championing technical innovations that differentiate product performance, elevate quality, and reduce manufacturing cost. You will leverage expertise in the specification, characterization, and and processing of thermoplastic medical materials in the development of viable technologies that deliver critical product features.

You will bring a breadth of expertise in common processing techniques to bear in support of global product development and engineering teams. Direct experience with extrusion processes, such as tubing or films extrusion is preferred; experience with other manufacturing processes like molding (e.g. injection molding) and/or joining (e.g. ultrasonic welding, heat-staking) are also desirable.

You will be responsible for applying state-of-the-art analytical techniques to select fit-for-purpose materials. Examples include characterizing plastics for their suitability using thermal and mechanical analysis, and/or computer-assisted modelling.

Your Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Specify plastic materials in consideration of design inputs such as product performance (e.g., strength, tolerance), manufacturing cost, biocompatibility, sterilization requirements, shelf life, and the like.

  • Consult with a wide range of new product development and sustaining engineering teams on technical matters related to selection and processing of medical plastics, and complete sub-projects as needed to support critical programs.

  • Build laboratory capabilities necessary for experimentation and materials characterization

  • Cultivate a network of strategic suppliers and external development partners to rapidly advance project goals

  • Survey technical publications and patent landscape to stay abreast of technical advancements in the field

  • Drive research programs aimed at incubating and de-risking new technologies.

  • Master’s Degree or PhD in a discipline such as Plastics Engineering, Polymer/Materials Science, Biomedical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering, or similar.

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in product development

  • Recognized as a leader in the field plastics engineering demonstrated through an active track record of publications, patents, participation in trade associations, conferences, and the like.

  • Demonstrated track record of successful product developments

  • Significant experience in the medical device or pharmaceutical industry

  • At least 5 years of experience leading project teams independently

  • Specialization one of the following is preferred: multilayer films, extruded tubing, injection molding, composites
